xvp - Moving to Las Vegas

I'm hearing a few rumblings from people again thinking about moving to Las
Vegas. Of course this is a great time, because prices for houses haven't
been this low in about 8 years and there are a lot of lovely houses and
condos on the market. Even lower prices for renting condos and houses.

A few years ago I wrote an article about Moving to Las Vegas with a
few tips. If anyone would like a copy, email me privately.

Also I have a friend who is a real estate agent and she is excellent.
She was the agent on my house and did a great job, including staying with
us all the way through closing, which many agents don't do. Her name is
JoAnn Deagosteno. Her cell is probably the best way to reach her
702-239-5073; email _lvhousefinder@yahoo.com_ (mailto:lvhousefin…@…com) . She
works for Century 21.

Naturally for those of us who gamble, moving to Las Vegas is a
two-sided coin - lots of places to gamble, but you can also gamble too much.
Advantages are low cost food, including lots of comps if you do gamble (I've
hardly cooked at all in 8 years), lots of shows, and very very little snow.
So far we have no state income tax, but the sales tax is around 8%. Real
estate taxes are also fairly low, though car insurance may be higher than
you are used to. It does get quite hot here for 3 months, but the dry heat
really is a lot better than lower temperatures that have high humidity, such
as in Florida. Most people drive in their air conditioned cars, so that
is good. Unemployment is quite high right now, so I cannot recommend moving
if you are job hunting. However, if you are retired, you might like the
generally great weather and lack of hurricanes, snowstorms, ice storms,
floods, tornados, and so on.

I just got back to upstate New York after 4 years of living in Las Vegas. I made many friends there, definitely a good thing. I did enjoy the easy access to good vp, and the many comps, especially the food, which I shared often with my friends.

On the other hand, there are some things about LV the writer failed to mention, like the traffic, a real nightmare. Yes, taxes are low, but any government interaction comes with a fee, some of them pretty hefty. Auto registration is very expensive. My car insurance was twice the cost of what I pay here; food in the grocery is expensive (the cost of beef is unbelievable!). The writer also failed the mention the homeless, who are legion, the dust which covers everything, and of course, the blowing trash. You won't see any of that on the Travel Channel.

My ideal situation, which I'm still working on, is to live five months in Las Vegas, when its coldest here, and the rest of the year where there are some trees (and other living things).

I still like all the things about Las Vegas I liked before I moved there, but I guess I'm just not a desert person.

Interesting comments about living in vegas compared to other places but I think one MAJOR thing people are missing is that it is all relative to what you are familiar with.
I haven't heard anyone who lived in CA cities or near NYC (and by near I mean in a 3 mile radius) discuss the comparison:

1) traffic (ever drive on 495 going into NYC - nuff said)
2) hefty fees for stuff i.e. auto registration in both NYC/NJ/CA
3) insurance costs (NJ was a killer compared to LV for everything)
4) food costs (try buying chicken in CA)
5) homeless - shoot the homeless in vegas pale in comparison to CA and NYC has none, right?

Dust... well NYC doesn't have it but there's not many places in CA that don't !!!
But lovely NYC has that lovely pis smell near most buildings in addition to more garbage blowing around even without wind.

It is super expensive if you a have a new, big car. If you have old cars like my husband and me, it is only $40. The NV DMV has an online calculator that can estimate cost.

Misscraps' report about moving to Vegas is a must-read if you are thinking about it.

We have lived in Vegas (actually, Henderson) for two years and love it. The traffic is bad because the streets are always being repaired. It would be nice if they worked on one street at a time, but often alternate routes are also under construction. We have discovered a few timesavers, like using Decatur from 215 if I-15 is jammed. Desert Inn is good to cross town and avoid the Strip.

well, they steal your car anywhere! even in paradise!

Too much development.

Too much crime.

Dear Michael,

As a loyal Club Grazie member we wanted you to be the first to know that Club Grazie will now be called Grazie.

Grazie is an exciting new way for you to earn more points and rewards, in less time, by having more fun. It's the thrill of a royal flush, the thunderous applause of a standing ovation, or a romantic weekend never leaving your suite.

Custom designed to fit your lifestyle, status is easily earned doing all the things you love to do when you're a guest of The Venetian® or The Palazzo®. Earn while you EAT, SLEEP, SHOP & PLAY. Get the point? You will.

Best of all, you're already a member so when the new look of Grazie's "Are You In?" campaign begins to appear, the only question left for you is "How fast can you get here?" Click Here to log into your account and learn more. Your Grazie ID is # XXX.

We look forward to seeing you soon.

The answer to Mr. Bain's curious question is as follows:

I can get back to the Venetian as soon as you scrap the entire "No, Grazie" program and restore the original Venetian Players Club. This would include the prior coin-in to earn point structure as well as the actual Venetian/Palazzo VP inventory prior to April, 2008.

There, that should do it.

Question answered. Problem solved.

The bad news is that I now have zero points and am told that I only need to earn 30,000 points to reach the gold level.

The mystery is solved. By some ridiculousness, the e-mail that I received from the Venetian/Palazzo, informing me of the "new Grazie club" was meant for my son, but sent to my e-mail address. No wonder I could not log into his account. Our account ID's are almost identical (I guess because we signed up at about the same time, years and years ago.) But why did they send my son's e-mail message to my e-mail address?

Who knows?

Anyway, when I log onto my account, all my points are there.

I went to the "new Grazie" site this morning. First off, when I tried to log on, I was told that my password was invalid.

The good news is that when I set a new password and logged on I was greeted by a big "Welcome Back!".

The bad news is that I now have zero points and am told that I only need to earn 30,000 points to reach the gold level.

(I've been gold for several years now)

Surprise! Surprise! Surprise!

I love it when the slot clubs improve things. I always feel so much better.

LOL.
