XVP - Frugal Printer Cartridge alternative

The administrator has given me permission to post this recommendation for an alternative to buying expensive new printer cartridges.

Some VP-playing friends of ours (who are on this forum) have started a business in Vegas called Cartridge World, located in the strip mall at the SE corner of Flamingo and Decatur (where you see the Marie Callender restaurant).

The frugal feature of their business is that they refill laser and ink cartridges for printers, copiers, and fax machines for up to 50% less than the cost of a new cartridge. But for you on vpFree, because the owners are so grateful for all the help they've received through this forum, there's a frugal bonus - an extra 15% discount on the already-lower price of their refilled cartridges. To get this discount just mentioned the "magic" word- "vpfree"! Since Cartridge World is only a couple of blocks west of the Palms, this can be convenient for both locals and tourists to either bring in their own used cartridges to be filled while you wait - or to purchase already refilled ones.

A disclaimer here - I have no financial interest in this business; I just like to share frugal tips I have discovered. Plus I applaud any activity that is environmentally friendly. Did you know that a printer cartridge thrown into a landfill can take up to 450 years to decompose?

Seems like there is a lot of interest in this subject, XVP or not - probably because a lot of us print out a lot of gambling material, strategy charts, etc. I've gotten several private e-mails about this.

Anyway I have a HP printer and have never had refilled cartridges that gave me a good print quality. Someone just e-mailed me with this explanation:

<<This is because they are the only manufacturer that I know of that includes the "Print Head" for their printer on the cartridges. It seems they have a "built in" obsolescence so that if you try to refill them they usually fail before you have used up the first refill. Not due to a lack of ink but because of the print head.>>

Then someone else mentioned that Epson printers have a "smart chip" that needs to be "re-coded" when cartridge is refilled.

I asked the owners about all this and here was their answer:

<<The HP cartridges are actually the best to refill. Although the print head is on a cartridge, we can determine if it is in a good condition before giving it to customer. Cartridge World has a great success with refilling HP cartridges. We also have replacement chips for cartridges that have chip on them. As a matter of fact, I just read an article about HP and refilling industries. HP agreed that refilling does make sense and they are working on developing ink cartridges that will be easy to refill.>>

That would be a blessing!!!!!

If you have further questions about refilled cartridges, you can call Cartridge World at (702-444-1116) or e-mail them at Eglozman@yysinc.com . They are the experts here - you all know that I'm a technological dummy! They are members of this list - so I am going to let them field any further questions you have!

basically i think most cartridges can be refilled once or twice, but
there is a limit to the number of times you want to recycle the same
cartridge...

You are almost correct. Most of the ink cartridges can be refilled 5-6
times. Some will survive 10-15 (we've seen it), some will not work
after first refill (very few). We test every cartridge before it goes
to customer. There is an open invitation to look at the back of our
store where we have all the equipment, which includes about 33
printers (and we are not done buying them).
For toner laser cartridges the process is almost infinite. We replace
most of the parts inside with every reman.

If anybody is in a mood to see how it works, or if you are just in our
neighborhood please stop by. We will be glad to meet you.

On a related note, although not relevant to the list. Do you sell used color laser printers?

Just another take..

We have Cannon and Lexmark printers here, both InkJet.

I went to SAMS CLUB and bought a Generic Refill kit...I think it was about $17-19, included LARGE bottles of ink for the 3 basic colors, 2 of black, a couple for photo ink as well. Each bottle had a large needle in the top to make refilling easy. It had a little book to tell you how to refill MOST available cartridges, had a little finger drill, some stickers to recover the holes, etc.

Yeah, make sure you have plenty of paper towels handy the first time to do it, but from then on, it;s a breeze. I've refilled ours about 7 times and then just went and bought a new "Name Brand" printer just to be safe, not because of any lack of performance. I've been refilling about a year now, and am not even half way through these bottles.

Just my experience with these two printers and only InkJet....for what it's worth.

For those who (for whatever reason) are not inclined to refill their
cartridges (either themselves or by bringing them to a place that
does it), PLEASE recycle your cartridges anyways.

I am sure there is a school, church, synagogue, boy scout troop,
girl scout troop or other civic group in your area that collects the
cartridges, packages them up and ships them to somewhere for them to
be recycled as a fundraiser. I know they exist because I run the
one for my son's school. We made about $500 last year without a lot
of participation. My goal this year is to double this amount.

If you can't find one of these, then Staples accepts most, and HP
will send you pre-paid envelopes for their own. It is almost
obscene how may cartridges are used up every year and recycling them
saves everyone money and the world all at the same time.

Maybe I should write an article about this?

I use Cannon BCI 24 and they are not refillable and it seems no one
wants these cartridges for anything. I used to refill a former model
but the inks were so bad they ended up jamming the printer (and also
made poor copies) and I ended up having to replace the printer. Be
careful with refills. The little extra you save doesn't seem to be worth
it in the "long run."

We are looking how to start the recycling program. We would be glad to
purchase printer cartridges (ink and laser) that you are planning to
trash.
Please bring them to us!!!!
Elliot, is there anyway we can participate in your recycling program?
We will install our recycle bins. We will take care of picking up
these cartridges and will pay promptly. We use a company in Canada for
the cartridges that can not be refilled. This company re-uses the
plastic. As you probably know we are new Vegas residents and it is
kind of hard to approach schools or any other organizations if you do
not know anybody and have a heavy Rusian accent...
Thanks to Jean we just got introduced to Blind Center of Nevada that
is also doing recycling program.

Elliot, please let me know.

thanks a lot

I beg to differ, that's the exact cartridge I am refilling for our Cannon printer, both the Black and the Color. So far, I have refilled the black about 6 times, and the color about 4 times (or at least topped off one or more of the colors.)

Maybe it's the printer itself, but as far as the cartridges, they can be refilled. Appreciate the warning tho.

Scot,
BCI 24 black and color are one of the best cartridges to refill. The
failure rate is less than 1%. It only cost about 5.99 for refill.
These cartridges that can be refilled for 10 and more times... If
anybody would ask me what printers I recommend for home use, I would
suggest Canon. Canon has great quality, not expensive consumables (you
can get them even cheaper by using refills, I had to put a little
advertisement...). As for ink being bad, we use specially formulated
ink for every cartridge model. Canon BCI 24 has a tendency to like
only ink formulated for BCI24.
Scot, could I try to encourage you to bring your cartridges to us for
refill. If for any reason you are not satisfied with results, we will
give you OEM BCI24 as a replacement. We also provide 100% guarantee
that the printer will not fail because of the refill.

Hope to se you soon in our store

Thanks for the info. I've asked several other "refillers" and they have
all told me to just toss them. But at $5.99 to refill, that's pretty
expensive. They only cost $6.89 new.

Sorry my bet.. I only started working with this...
The prices are 4.00 for black and 8.00 for color. Don't forget about
15% additional discount...
The prices of OEM's in office depot are: 7.89 for black and 17.69 for
color...

Sorry my bet.. I only started working with this...
The prices are 4.00 for black and 8.00 for color. Don't forget about
15% additional discount...
The prices of OEM's in office depot are: 7.89 for black and 17.69 for
color...

Thanks for the info. I've asked several other "refillers" and they have

expensive. They only cost $6.89 new.

Scot,
BCI 24 black and color are one of the best cartridges to refill. The
failure rate is less than 1%.

Ellen & Yan.

I'm just relating my past bad experience with refilling cartridges (not
particularly BCI 24.) I ended up with a printer in the shop for over two
weeks before they finally replaced it, driving back and forth, etc. Last
time I bought the BCI 24's they were $6.89 for black at Best Buy and
they gave a quantity discount when buying 3 or more. I go once a year
and buy a bunch and I'm done and never had another problem with the
printer since I've been using original manufacturer's inks. I certainly
wish you all the best with your business and perhaps it will work out
great for others. I'm just saying, that I tried it and it didn't work
for me. I was very disappointed that I ever tried it. I felt like I was
being "penny wise, but pound foolish." Others may have very positive
experiences with this.

Thanks.

Scot

Thank you for your kind words.
I 100% agree with your opinion. You have to do what you are
comfortable with.
If you feel more comfortable with OEM products than you should stay
with OEM's.

I am amazed at the number of posts on this off topic thread. And
even more amazed at who was the initiator. I'd rather see the Rob
Signer thread brought back than continue reading these, as the Singer
thread was closer to on topic (and yes I hated that thread too).

What next, how to add a harddrive? Reviews on anti virus software?
Windows upgrade recommendations?

Can we stick to VP??
