All I can say is it sure is a good thing the taxpayers paid the bill on that
$1 BILLION dollar runway several years ago. Given the 50% cut in flights
since the runway was announced it's obvious that extra capacity is certainly
being put to good use.
Back when the runway was being planned, designed (yes, and even built!), Lambert had over 600 flights a day and it was common -- even in good weather -- to have 15-30 minute delays departing or waiting to land. An additional runway was desperately needed.
After 9/11, air travel dropped precipitously and flights were cut back in STL and across the nation. Considering the runway was 75% built at that point, what would you done? Stopped construction, having spent $1 billion and getting nothing from it? That makes no sense.
