Why not Reno (instead?)

It seems like every day here in Vegas, some decent play disappears;
we now have to scrounge to find $1 9/6 JOB, 10/7 DB in any
denomination, and the endangered FPDW, along with its cousin, FPJW,
clings to life in a very few places. I have some friends coming in
for the weekend, and I looked for some rooms for them; even places
like the Gold Coast (the freakin' GOLD COAST!) wanted $99, $109, etc.

where the hell has all the value gone, and where did it go so
quickly? I mean, room and food prices have gone to the MOON in the
last six months; the gambling (7/5 Bonus Poker and 6-5 blackjack)
has gotten HORRIBLE. And there aren't even any decent promos out
there. Check Scott Krause's weekly columns. The list of giveaways is
short and kind of pathetic.

With show tickets at $100+ a pop, rooms at $179 and up, and $35
buffets, there's no such thing as a "cheap Vegas weekend" any more.
With that in mind, how many of you have considered Reno instead?

1. Air connections, while not as extensive as Vegas, are still easy
(United and Southwest are the major carriers). And anyone who has
been through both airports would consider the Reno airport a rest
cure.

2. Hotel rooms are uniformly $25-50 on weekdays and $49-$79 on
weekends. There are several properties that rival anything Vegas has
to offer in terms of comfort and amenities.

3. The video poker does NOT suck. Check the database for Atlantis,
Silver Legacy, Peppermill, Cal-Neva, among others. Even the worst
place has PickEm or 9/6 JOB.

4. The setting and scenery are, well, on a scale of 1 to 100, Reno
is 92 and Vegas is ....3. And you can drive up to Lake Tahoe in an
hour, perhaps the most beautiful place on the planet.

5. Traffic is minimal, and getting around is a snap since there are
only two casino areas to visit.

6. There are other things to do in the area besides gamble. Vegas
has no scenery, no culture, no diversion other than gambling
(shopping, maybe). This is DELIBERATE as leisure time spent in
parks, museums, at concerts, etc. is time NOT spent losing at the
tables. By contrast, Reno had and still has an identity that
predates, and will outlive, gambling.

7. The weather, in the summer in particular, is MUCH nicer in Reno
than Vegas.

These greedheads here in vegas need to be shown a lesson, that they
can't just keep gouging and gouging and expect the sheep to keep
crowding in to be sheared (although that's how it indeed looks at
the moment). Take your business up to Northern Nevada, where it will
be appreciated!

My wife and I are going to Reno Dec 13th , (as guests
of Harrahs , including airfare), I hope it'll be as
good as you make it sound!

I think many show prices are artificially inflated in Las Vegas, but
recently, during my first visit to the Reno/Tahoe area, I found
myself considering the same question. There is a lot in Reno for the
VP tourist to appreciate. The airport is a breeze, compared to the
likes of O'Hare, McCarran or even Midway, and has several auto rental
lots directly across the road from baggage claim --No shuttle
necessary. Airfare is competitive with LV in my market. Driving
around Reno is a pleasure (in my admittedly limited experience) while
LV and ChiTown driving can be a horror show. You can't walk around a
Reno area casino without tripping over a FP JB or NSUD machine and
better machines and plays are easily available. Comps are easy.
Rooms are cheap. The mountains are beautiful. I consider
Reno/Tahoe and Laughlin over Las Vegas more and more. OTOH, Las
Vegas has a freakshow, three ring circus insanity that cannot be
reproduced and there is still value there. One just has to look
harder.

Well said. Reno is definitely the better choice these days.

We can't really fault the casinos for gouging the prices of rooms and shows when the vacancy rates are nil and "O" sells out every night.

The real mystery here is WHY Vegas so incredibly popular among the masses. Remember the forecasts of gloom and doom about the impact of California Indian gaming, riverboats, Tunica, and Biloxi, all sucking potential customers from an overbuilt Strip with way too many rooms to fill? Bah! Never happened. They keep coming, more and more of 'em, and we can't build rooms fast enough. I guess having "CSI" and "Dr. Vegas" and "American Casino" etc. glamorizing the city helps, plus nonstop promotions on the Travel Channel. Or something. Who knows?

My next trip will definitely be to Reno. The airfare from Seattle to Las Vegas is averaging about $260 when a year ago you could fly for approx. $180. The decline in full pay machines is another reason I don't care if I go to Las Vegas or not since I'm only a video poker player.

And on TV: Reno 9-1-1 promotes Reno, does it not?? Ha Ha.

Reno tries harder.

True, not the crazy wild creatures in Reno. Some would say that's a
plus. I would also say there's no comparable "Strip" in Reno - yet
most Reno casinos have enough of a taste of the glamor inside. I
imagine that the high limit areas are tiny & muted in Reno, compared
to Vegas, but those aren't my realms anyhow. ANd, some folks like the
throb of a crowd, maybe they feel better knowing they re in a hip,
popular place. Ugh!

I feel like I'd be just another small fish in the Ocean in LV. I feel
like a bigger fish in a smaller pond in Reno. That's good. So far, in
my two years of VP, I've never seen every seat full on a VP bank,
even the $1 FPDW at Silver Legacy about 11 months ago.

Truthfully, none of this much matters to me once I lock into a
machine. Just me and my machine. That's all I need.

No need to advertise. That's the casino's job. ANd the chamber of
commerce.

Agreed, John, but they don't come here to gamble like they did
previously. Tourists now spend more money and time on shows,
entertainment, restaurants, shopping, etc. It has become a place to come
and see, party and whatnot, but gambling is beginning to take a
backseat.

No flights avalible for me, 4-5 hour drive

Atlantis is where to go for every game other than FPDW,

print the data base to use as a map, funny shaped casino

Sky terrace is great for non smokers, 10/6DDB NSUD 10/7DB avalible

less than flight to LV. If this is too off topic please say so or
tell me to look in the archive, but can someone tell me what the
best place to stay in Reno is? Also, is a rental mandatory.

A rental is not mandatory, especially if you are just playing VP and
limiting yourself to downtown. I noticed many of the Reno hotels had
free shuttles to and from the airport. If you are staying at a
casino away from the downtown area or intend to do some touring, some
may find a rental preferable. There is a Reno forum for research and
questions.

I like Reno and would go there more often but from the East Coast it
is not easy to get there and to get there cheaply. The best seems
to be America West which requires a change of planes in Las Vegas
which just seems like be a bummer.

Anyone know an easier/cheaper way to get to Reno from the East Coast?

Southwest can be an option to Reno. Philadelphia to Reno is $99 each way with advance purchase. Their flights aren't shown on the big travel sites, you have to search separately on their website www.southwest.com. Remember that Southwest lets you change flights for the same price as long as you do it at least two weeks before your flight (if you got the two-week advance purchase fare) and as long as their are still seats available in your fare category, otherwise you'll pay the difference in the increased fare.

What is the weather like in Reno during the months of March and April?

The weather in Reno basically mirrors that of Northern California.
The rainy season in No Cal generally ends in mid-March (and kind of
suddenly at that; when it stops raining, the next rainy day may be
six months later). However, several of the last few seasons have
seen the rainy season actually extend well into April, with the vast
majority of the year's precipitation occuring in late winter and
early spring.

I would say, by March 20 or so your odds of nice spring weather are
better than even, and the later in the year you go, the better those
odds get. The days will be 55-65 degrees with lots of sunshine;
nights clear and cool with a low of 35-40. (Oh, and if it DOES
precipitate in Reno that time of year, it's more likely to be rain
than snow.)

In any case it will probably be an improvement over a New England
March/April.

Also, if you like to ski, it will definitely be still possible in
March just about everywhere, as resort closures happen mostly in
April/May.

Atlantis, Silver Legacy and Peppermill are good places to stay especially without a car, as all are on Virginia Street and the bus service is very good and modern. I have had problems with car rentals in past years (Enterprise is the best). Taxis are not a bad choice for travel either. There are many reasons for having a vehicle though since Virginia City, Carson City and Tahoe are within easy driving distance. Snow can be an issue at times if you go into the mountains. Tahoe has airport pickup if you make prior arrangements; the vp is not the best but the scenery summer or winter is (much better than Mount Charleston).

The Legacy is downtown and is physically connected to Circus Circus and Eldorado. The first impression of downtown is depressing; homeless people, construction and vacant store fronts.

I like to gamble at the Calneva because they have great 10-play video poker, in nickels, dimes and quarters. I used to play and stay at the Silver Legacy because I played their single play full-pay progressive Deuces Wild. I enjoy it but I still prefer 10-play. So now I stay and play at the Calneva. I like the idea of getting up in the morning and taking a quick ride down the elevator and being in the casino.

I know the Calneva is a dump but it has excellent multi-play video poker and the staff are very friendly. When I arrive some of the change people come over to say hi-one lady always hugs me when she sees me. When I play at the Silver Legacy I am anonymous but at the Calneva I know the change people and the security guards and many of the regular customers-this is where a lot of the locals go. The Calneva is a throw back to the 1950's and I love it.

My preference is to stay where I play so I can crawl up to my room at some very late hour and flop into bed.
