St Louis trip report

On Sept 11th my husband Bob and I drove down to St. Louis for a few
days. 310 miles from Chicago. Was our 29th anniversary and we had
never been to St. Louis.

First, thank you all for any advice and tips offered.

We stayed at Harrah`s for 3 days. We each had received an offer for
3 nights and $50 dinner at one of their restaurants. I had booked
online a few weeks prior and the day before we left a Harrah`s
representative called to confirm that we were coming. I asked if my
$50 coupon could be added to our room and was told absolutely not.
Missouri law states something about complying with all the rules on
the coupon which is tied into room offer. (I was considering
booking another room for 3 days on my own offer but decided not
to). She was a very pleasant and really like the welcome wagon
lady.

When we checked into Harrah`s the front desk took my coupon and
added it to our room with no problem. If you get an answer you
don`t like at Harrah`s just ask someone else...

Monday we ate at Charlie Gittos. Crab cake good, potatoes way under
cooked, my steak was very good and Bob`s was tough. We very rarely
complain and I told the waiter the steak was tough. Well we got one
complimentary dessert. Wedding cake that was superb.
Would not recommend Gittos with our experience.

We did not put any extensive time playing at Harrah`s. I did find
the FP video poker machines on the Island side. Bank of 12.
Usually there were one or two seats open. I was watching people
around me and really most knew no strategy. Those were the only
playable machines. As Bob and I were walking thru I noticed a young
man had just gotten a sequential royal flush. >$24,000 on a quarter
machine. First time I had ever seen a .25 RF pay that much.

We spent most of our time sight seeing your lovely city. We went
down to the arch and did the riverboat. Ate at a place near the
Arch, Morgan Street
Brewery that had great crabcakes, meat loaf and great beer. 5 claps

Bob is a big history buff esp Lewis and Clark. Went to the
Bellefontaine Cemetary to see Clark`s gravesite. White Have
Grant`s National Historic site. St Charles Lewis and Clark museum.

Went to the Ameristar Casino for a few hours. Appreciated all the
info on where the playable machines were. We really enjoyed the
Ameristar. Much nicer than Harrah`s. Ate at there buffet which was
one of the best. Half way home I remembered I didn`t try the
toasted ravioli - next time.

Found that St Louis was easy to get around. Everybody was very
pleasant. No traffic jams. What a treat. Paid $2.18 gal for gas
there. Here is Chicago suburbs it was $2.85.

Thank you all for the info,
Carol

Thanks so much for the report! I had to laugh at the "Missouri Law"
excuse. Those of us who live here have heard that phrase hundreds,
if not thousands, of times. It's the casinos' excuse for everything
up to and including "solar flares."

Note that another casino in Kansas City (also in Missouri) DOES allow
a spouse to use the dinner part of an offer without booking a room.
Yes, you should have booked two rooms.

Sorry about Charlie Gitto's. For future reference, the best crab
cakes are at the Ameristar restaurant, 47 Port Street.

There are more better machines at Harrah's than just that one row in
the Island side. They are located on the Mardi Gras side. Last week
I reported them missing, so they may have been out of service when
you were there. This week they are back in pace in the Mardi Gras
casino after some renovations in the area.
