Reno on a budget

Hi all,

A couple of us have thought that we'd like to take a trip to Reno but it'll have
to be on a budget this year. Can you offer any advice about decent place to
stay for not a lot of money that has decent $.05 Video Poker (if there is such a
thing :-))? We'd like the hotel to have an outdoor pool also.

We would be staying three nights. We like to take walks outside so it would
need to be somewhere safe.

Thanks for any assistance..

Carol

Well, you could always stay downtown in the triplex (Circus Circus/Silver Legacy/Eldorado) and then just walk around downtown...
But I'd say for price and to take a nice walk, I'd suggest Western Village. It's around $40 a night weekdays and $70 weekends, and they have the Sparks Marina right there to walk around.
The casino @ Western Village has great nickel vP, and just down the street is JANugget, which has PLENTY of great nickel vP.

You could try the Peppermill. They have some full pay nickel machines including 10/7 DB, 9/6 JOB and NSUD. You can go for a nice walk around Virginia Lake by exiting at the rear of the hotel and turning right. It is a very pretty park with nice residential streets nearby. A room in the Montego Bay wing ought to run you about $49 during the week.

For the cheapest stay, try the Cal-Neva downtown. They, too, have good nickle machines. From there it is a very short walk to the River Walk, where you can walk, jog, or bike 10 miles in either direction. The rooms are basic but not bad.

Circus Circus has a few nickel machines and cheap rooms especially using the Reno Rules site. Getting to the River Walk is not the nicest of walks.

Thanks for the suggestions about things to do and where to stay on a budget in
Reno. The lake and River Walk sound like fun things to do. We're going to go
in a couple of weeks and we hope the weather stays nice enough for sitting
around the pool.

Just an update to the 'Reno on a budget' trip.

We've booked a room at J. A. Nugget in the West Tower. They are having a 20%
discount off the room price if you stay two nights and 30% off if you stay three
nights. We're staying three nights so the room ended up being $38 night
including taxes. Please someone tell me this is a decent room.

We're also thinking about going to Bill's Casino at Stateline to see what a
non-smoking casino is like. Does anyone here frequent that casino? I'll check
the database to see if there's anything decent to play there.

Carol

I was at Bill's last week. They have FP JoB on lots of machines.
There is a upright semi-ugly deuce in a bank of two on the Rte 50
wall.

It's a small all slot joint with no rewards club.

I'd rather visit Carson City.

Best,

Peter

I've never stayed at the Nugget but I've read that one side is noisy from the I-80 traffic and the other has the railroad noise. Also, there isn't much to walk to from there and that was one thing you were looking for. Try RenoRules.com for some deals.

I was at Bill's about two months ago and had to laugh! I was
the only person there except for a change person roaming around. I
think that says about all there is to say.

Good choice.
When you check in, ask for a higher level, freeway side{your room number will be an ODD number ending}(very quiet, trust me)
There is victorian square to walk around right there.
And if you want to go down the street to Western Village, you can walk around Sparks Marina Parks (http://www.ci.sparks.nv.us/living/parks/marina/)
Don't bother going and playing at Bills. If you want to go look at Lake Tahoe, then sure make the trip, but don't go simply for Bills.
I'll be at JAN for the next two weekends, so don't forget to say hi. : )

Yes, the romms on the higher floors are quieter. BUT, make sure your window is fully closed. A lot of times, they are shut, but if you don't pull the lever all the way down, a lot of noise will still come thru ;-).

The rooms are kinda 1990s, but very clean and of a decent size. When you are checking in, for a small fee, I think around $30 a night, you can upgrade to a petite suite. These are much larger and have a jacquzzi bathtub.

Also, the Orozko restaurant has a $23.99 steak and lobster special that is very good and large portions. Another couple of "don't miss" items: The Bloody Mary Buffet at the lobby bar each morning- make your own Bloody Mary with a wide array of juices, veggies, seasonings, etc.; and I think they call it "Lazy Man's Ciopinno" at the Oyster Bar - it is a very good ciopinno with all the shells removed and it only costs around $15 which is very reasonable for good quality ciopinno.

Good Luck!!

Peter, I am the VPFREE monitor for Bill's. I was just there today but was unable to check

the (2) 10c full pay machines as they were both in use. Are you saying that they no longer have FPDW?

The Montbleu has eliminated their 25c JOB (I will update the databse shortly), so Bill's JOB is the best

25c play in South Tahoe. The best 25c at Harrah's Tahoe is BP 99.16% + about 0.2% comps + offers.

Also noted that Bill's now opens at 10am and closes at 2am Mon-Thrs.

Inventory at Harvey's, Harrahs and Horizon remains as stated in the database.

Did not get to Lakeside to see if they reversed their downgrades. When I was there

last time for my free Senior Breakfast they said I did not have enough play to qualify!

Correct. The pay table was a little worse that NSUD. I didn't write
it down, but I think it was 15-10-4-4-3-2-1. I'll take notes next
time.

We checked the Western on 9/10, based on reports and this VP data base for good nickel VP. NONE. Not one decent machine to be found. All the VP listed machines are MIA. We found decent nickels at Club Cal Neva and a few at Peppermill, as listed in the data base. Found Zero at J A Nugget.

I've been to JA Nugget several times in the last year and did not find anything close to 10/7 DDB. Where is it?? Plenty of 9/6 DDB including STP and multiplay, but nothing over 100% like 10/7 DDB. Only one progressive that is 9/5 (single play bank along south wall.)

That would be great if 10/7 DDB really exists there!!! Thanks in advance.

If you decide to go up to see Tahoe, I strongly suggst that you do not bother to drive all around the lake. You can see the best if you go over the Mt Rose Hwy from Reno ( be sure to look for and stop at the badly marked viewpoint at a right hairpin turn about half way down.) and then drive south down the east shore of the lake. Then drive around the south end and go to Emerald Bay SP. There are good views across the lake from the east side. On the west you mainly look at the back walls of lakefront buildings. The road is narrow and features people driving out from driveways and, worse, tavern parking lots.

After leaving Emerald Bay, drive back east through the permanent traffic jam around the south end of the lake. If you feel like a bit more adventure, go over the Kingsbury Grade and drive north back to Reno. You can visit Carson City that way although you are now having a fairly long day. No longer than around the lake and lot more fun IMHO.

Enjoy your trip! Frank

Unless it has been downgraded in the last month, there is a circular "pod" of 4 MG/MD machines located approx half way between the the Horse Shoe Bar (next to the craps table) and the Casino Cabaret. And to triangulate, adjacent to the table games in a direct line with the room where the cocktail waitresses get their drinks (aka, the Catbox). The 10/7 DDB is available at .25, but at $1- I think it only pays 9/6, and I didn't check the lower denominations.
