Please explain "Bankroll" and which Denomination to play.

Is Bankroll pertaining to ONLY the money you bring or willing to play
in ONE session or casino visit?

IF I have a bankroll of say $50,000.00 but each time I go to a casino
(say 10-12 times a year), I only bring in and play $300 to $500, am I
still considered to have a proper bankroll? Meaning...can I still
play the $1 machines with this amount, for example?

Another scenario: (Besides saving up, reducing number of visits and
going to vegas instead)

(A) The $1 machines have much better Pay Schedules: 9/6 JB, 8/5 BP,
9/6 DDB, etc.
while
(B) the .25 cents or lower machines have terrible Pay Schedules: 7/5
JB, 7/5 or 6/5 BP, 8/5 DDB, etc. (of course Indian casinos)

and arming yourself with $300-500 only per visit, which machine
denomination would you play?

I'm Confused!?* Please help! Thanks in advance!!!

Sorry, I'd like to add more info.
Last weekend, I chose playing the $1 machines but played it with 1-
coin in instead of the Max-coin (recommended) and guess what? After
30 minutes of play, boom --- got dealt a Royal Flush for $250 -- ouch!

If I had played the Max-coin of 5, I wasn't sure if I would have
still been there 30 minutes later though...

Thanks Lawrence!
I did that a few times before (chose the lower bad Pay Schedules .25
cents machines), won about $800-$1200 for about 4-8 hours of
work/play then made that "mistake" --> switch to the $1 machines and
blew it all :<
Lesson learned...

If you only want to play $1, play the .25 vp machines. Actually
$1.25. But you would have done better hitting the royal on a quarter
machine with max coin bet than betting $1 on a dollar game. No guts
no glory, Gilbert.

Actually, bankroll is best used to refer to the amount that you're
prepared to risk over the course of play, and when exhausted, you'll quit.

This is the sense in which the "bankroll requirement" of playing a
specific game (e.g. double bonus) is used.

The best term to use when referencing how much you're prepared to risk
during a given trip is "trip stake", eliminating much confusion.

I think of bankroll as what one can afford to lose in the long run,
not just in one session, but I liked Bob Dancer's comment about
bankroll in his book. He wrote that he didn't know what it was. I've
never known exactly what mine is, either. Something should be set
aside for expenses, for starters, but I have no idea how to determine
how much. How much I'd be willing to lose changes, often without my
knowledge, also.

I guess this is still not very clear to me.
The "course of play" refers to ???
(A) Just that one trip
or
(B) That one trip plus future trips (if thinking about that "long-
term session" but with breaks in-between trips)

And the denom to select is the "lower" denomination with bad Pay
Schedules vs $1 denom with "ok" Pay Schedules? (with $300-500 trip
bankroll)

Thanks Harry!

Sorry, you're right, I was obscure. Bankroll is a "lifetime" concept.

Generally speaking, the optimal play is a function of the losses
you're willing to sustain (both in a single trip and cumulatively) and
the risk posed by the machines available for your play (in terms of
return, volatility, and denomination).

Obviously it's advisable to play the highest return machines in a
casino, however, if those machines are at a denomination or of a type
that put you at too high a risk, then you may have to settle for lower
return machines if you're determined to play (accepting the higher
theoretical cost).

On the trip "stake" you note ($300-500), $ play is generally
ill-advised, no matter how strong the paytables. Relatively low
volatile $1 9/6 JB play has a strong probability of wiping that stake
out in one or two hours. Higher volatility and higher return 10/7 DB
at the $1 level has no compunction about wiping that out within 15-30
minutes.

Since no matter what you play, we're unlikely to be talking about the
potential to make your fortune at the game, the thing to optimize is
playing time and enjoyment. On that basis, you'd fare best sticking
to $.25 play, whatever the game. Even a modestly low volatile play
such as 8/5 JB, played at $.50, has a pretty good potential to wipe
you out within 3 or 4 hours.

Ooops...I keep on missing to say about my "goal" with the $300-500
bankroll to play in a single trip. Sorry.

Optimize play time and enjoyment is always good! But...
What if my trip goal is set to just "to double what I brought with me
to play and stop", does it make more sense to play the $1 machines
that have better Pay Schedules than the lower denom ones?
I guess in short..."Is my set goal attainable faster on those $1
machines?". To me it seems like it is especially if not counting
into consideration the possibility of hitting the RF.
What do you think?

I think you could easily go through $300-$500 in a couple of hours
at the $1 level on nearly any game. You might try pick-em which I
believe has the lowest variance and since the hands pay more I could
see you doubling that amount on the quarter level. Of course this
is only if you are lucky.

Think about how many days your staying and divide the money up
between each day (a stop-loss limit). Unless of course you don't
mind blowing it all at once and spending the rest of your trip doing
other things.

I just remembered in your original post you were talking about
Indian casinos and not vegas. Sorry disregard that last post.

Gilbert, you're making this a lot more complex then it has to be.

As to definition of bankroll, there is nothing to be gained by
thinking that it means anything other than the *maximum* amount you
are willing to wager when you walk into a casino. If you walk into
any Indian casino or any Vegas casino and you've got 300 bucks in
your pocket to gamble with, that's your bankroll. That's the
traditional meaning of the word and it applies to every casino game
I've encountered in the past 40 years. If there is some "special"
definition for the word bankroll that applies to vp players, like all
the money you've got at home that you may or may not gamble with six
months from now, then the word has no meaningful definition at all.

Next, as far as which games to play and at which denominations you
should play, of course you should choose full pay if it's available.
If it isn't, look for the next best pay tables. If they all suck
then it's your decision on whether to play at all or not.

You've got an admittedly limited bankroll, so which denominations
should you play? You'll probably get the most bang for your buck on
the lower denomination machines. Remember, whether you choose
nickel, quarter or dollar machines, your results are likely to
reflect a high degree of variance because you probably won't be
playing thousands of hands. In other words, your relatively brief
playing time is more subject to deviations, even on lower variance
games. That could work to your benefit, but usually it doesn't.

Finally, no matter what you choose to do, nobody here is going
guarantee your success or cover any of your losses, so the final
decisions are yours alone.

definition for the word bankroll that applies to vp players, like

all

the money you've got at home that you may or may not gamble with

six

months from now, then the word has no meaningful definition at all.

Next, as far as which games to play and at which denominations you
should play, of course you should choose full pay if it's

available.

If it isn't, look for the next best pay tables. If they all suck
then it's your decision on whether to play at all or not.

You've got an admittedly limited bankroll, so which denominations
should you play? You'll probably get the most bang for your buck

the lower denomination machines.

Appreciate all your inputs, Lawrence!
Now I know that my bankroll is whatever money I bring into the
casino for playing. And thank you! Sorry for the misunderstanding
but I'm not really asking anybody here for a guaranteed success on
this small bankroll. What I was trying to get is the "better" choice
of play to have a better chance of achieving my goal of mainly
doubling my bankroll (winning $300-500 or loosing my bankroll).

Currently the way I am doing it, I've been playing the $1 machines
9/6 JB, 8/5 BP, or 9/6 DDB but playing only 1-coin or sometimes 2-
coins instead of the .25 cents or .05 cents machines that have
really bad Pay Schedules like 8/5 or 7/5 JB, 7/5 BP, 9/5 or 8/5 DDB.
I'm doing ok with this most of the time except that 2 or 3 times
already, the RF shows up which is enough to meet my goal and go home
a winner. But on the way home, I still wonder whether I would have
been better of in the lower denom (RF paying $1,000 for .25 cent
machines). RF cycle is approx. 40,000 so I thought I should not
count on it much to achieve my game plan or goal. If I'm in vegas,
no doubt I'll be playing max-coin in those lower denom machines.
I guess not many play vp with small bankroll like me (in Indian
casinos) so I think I'll just keep experimenting for awhile to see
which way is better.

Again, thank you all for your comments and suggestions.

Wish vegas is a lot closer!

Gilbert,

Most of the games you noted were about 1% lower payback at the .25
level (except for JOB which was around 2%). The loss for the royal
will average out to around 1.3%, so playing the dollars will actually
cost a little in the long run but should also reduce the volatility.
You should also note there may be stragegy differences as well.

Dick

PS. It would bother some people to get short pay royals. If this
bothers you as well, it should be another consideration.

Gilbert, one other thing that I forgot to mention. You also asked
which you should play....dollar machines for one unit or quarter
machines for X units.

Assuming the same pay tables, it doesn't matter. A dollar pair of
jacks in dollar job gets you back a dollar. Four quarters in quarter
job gets you back the same dollar. Also, you aren't sacrificing
anything in return by betting lower amounts as you would be if you
were playing slots, except in the case of a few jackpot or
progressive games. Payoffs are proportional. In other words, in the
case of a full house in quarter 9/6 job, a payout of 9 is to a bet of
25-cents as a payout of 45 is to a bet of 1.25. So if a dollar
machine has a better paytable than the same game in quarters, you'd
choose the dollar machine, and bet your one dollar, rather than
playing the quarter machine for four quarters, and vice versa.
