The long-standing $50-$100/hour play at the Hotel Nevada in Ely is
finally dead. All 12 of the 9-line spin poker machines and the one
20-line spin poker deluxe machine, all of which had full pay kings or
better joker in 1 cent, 2 cents, 5 cents, 10 cents, 20 cents and 25
cents denominations, have been changed. They all now just pay 75
instead of 100 on quads. This play had been there relatively
unchanged since 1995. The promotions were worth at least an extra
$25-$30/hour.

So, the people who didn't use a card can't be prosecuted? That is not a fair deal?

Yes, and when I made that "spring is in the air" post early last year
that Jean so graciously published in Frugal Fridays I alluded to
the "little Northern Nevada town" I was in. It just happened to be
Ely. All good plays end sooner or later. Oh, Well.

Wow! A nice change! A play that remained alive because some
ignoramous didnt post it here or on any other information medium. 5
through 25cent FPJW spin poker would've been very appetizing to
hungry fleas, burn-out artists, the meth addict, and the Danceman
himself. I hope the handful of players who kept it more or less to
themselves made alot of money! Of course it helps that Ely is
located on the other side of the known universe!

(discussion of Ely Joker play)
I knew about the play for two years, Mickey and I even had an em
exchange about it once, I still wasn't going to Ely. Even for double
royals. I had a strong birthday play once, 2.5% at dollars, but even
still, that one couldn't touch the one in Ely.
I'm sorry to see it go, but both Doug and Dan are incorrect about

Did the article in Video Poker Player mention that promotions included
being paid a $1 bonus on every quad (and multiples on multiple quads)
and $500-$1,000/wek from drawings and other bonuses (this required
staying at least a month at a time)?

BTW, I'm pretty sure Spinpoker (or any platform based on the Moody patent) was not yet available in 1995. As I recall, the first multiplays started showing up in late 97 or early 98 and the Spins a couple of years later.

I could be wrong about the spin poker machines being there in 1995
but I have a W-2 from there that I got on September 6, 1996, for
$1,800. I usually stayed a month when I played there and played 5
cent rather than 25 cent because the hourly return was almost as good
and created little attention. Until they put TITO in later the 25
cent denomination was really slow to play because they paid out
nickels when they went over the limit, which was set very low on most
machines.

I would imagine that fewer than 5% of the people on this forum have
ever been to Ely. I stopped in for lunch last summer, and was overly
unimpressed with Ely. I drove from Wendover to South Lake Tahoe on hwy
50 which is known as the lonelest highway in America. I looked at all
the old Game Kings at that Hotel thinking to myself there might be a
gem in there, never thinking to look at the spinpokers. However, even
if I found one I sure did not want to spend any time in Ely. I remember
driving through Eureka, Austin and Fallon wondering what gems might be
in those small casinos. I don't care how strong the play was in Ely, I
would not want to spend more than a few days in that town. You say you
spent a month at a time in Ely? I hope you made good money.

A month in Ely weasn't really that bad. It was worth about
$12-15K/month and until recently I could also make money playing poker
on the internet, although the U.S. government put an end to that. The
hunting and fishing in Ely is also excellent. I drove highway 50 many
times and in fact there was a great play in Eureka. The bar at the
Owl Inn had two $1 Draw Til U Win machines worth about $150/hr.

Everybody has different goals and preferences. I remember when Doug wrote a really great article in Dan's VP Times about the life of a pro.He works very hard and for long hours. Few people here would do it. Most of the folks here (regardless of how skilled) play for enjoyment first and profit second (at best) and they wouldn't enjoy a month in Ely, I imagine. But if I was young and unmarried (or even old and unmarried) , I would have been happy to camp out in that town for a lot longer than a month. Like Doug says, there's plenty of hunting and fishing for those who like that, a great VP play seven days a week, Low crime rate, no smog, starry nights.. Not exactly hell on earth.

If a good play is to last for 12 years like the one in Ely, then
nobody who plays it is going to talk about it until it's over. To my
knowledge there were only about 8 people in Vegas who ever knew about
it and they usually only came to play on their birthday when it was
double on royals. The only comparable long-lasting play I know about
was Draw-Til-You-Win, which lasted for about 10 years in quite a few
casinos because few people knew it was a 103.2% game.
I don't think either game was around nearly as long as Doug says.
I'm pretty sure the Ely play was only there about 5 or 6 years. I
think it ended last November. In October the jokers were only on the 1
spin poker deluxe(10 cent) and the 2 All Stars spin poker. The 12 or
so regular spins had already been changed. But I think everything was
gone by November.
I was there in 1999 when we scouted the whole state for
DrawTilUWin, and I'm pretty sure there were no spin pokers there or
anywhere. By the way, there were $1 DTUW in about 10 casinos. We
killed all but 3 of them within about 3 months with no competition.
I'm wondering about Doug's statement about DTUW being around for
10 years. I thought it all ended about 4 years ago, with Yerington
being the last place to pull it. I'd be curious to know if it's been
anywhere else since. I don't think they showed up until 1998 or 1999,
but I could be wrong.
The first Draw Til U Win to my knowledge was at the Rainbow Casino in
Henderson. It was copyright 1995. The game did not work correctly
and was withdrawn after complaints. There were several copyright 1996
games in the Las Vegas Club. These games worked correctly except you
had to physically take holds of off cards when you ended up with a
hand like 4 to the SF after holding a pair initially. Bally fixed this
by 1997 and all copyright 1997 and later games worked correctly. Rich
is correct that the game was not really played seriously until about
1999 but it was probably around before that. Was it really 4 years ago
that they took them out of Yerington? I guess time passes quickly. I
thought that was 2004 at the earliest.
I'm not sure about the spin poker in Ely. I have a w-2 from September
1996 for $1,800 and I think this must have been a dealt royal on 5
cent spin poker because I can't think of anything else I would have
played there. I wouldn't have stayed there very long at that time
because the machines paid out nickels on any accumulated wins over
$100 which made them difficult if not impossible to play for any
length. The last time I was in Ely was July 2006. I did communicate
with two other people in January 2007 and May 2007 who indicated to me
that the games were still there and only the promotions had been
changed to limit the shirt bonus to one per person per night. I don't
know if the double royal promotion is still there but even so it
wouldn't be worth much as the next best game was 15/9/4/4/3 deouces at
98.9%. :

I made a mistake. We scouted the state and started playing DTUW
in 1998 not 1999.
As for your message... Rainbow Club copywrite 1995? Vegas Club
copywrite 1997? When were these games actually put into the casino?
You didn't find the one at the Rainbow Club until we found it at
several other places in 1998. I had been in there several times
before 1998 and never saw it. The ones at the Vegas Club were
definitely not there when we checked in 98, but were there a couple
years later.I guess it's possible they were there more than once.
As for Ely, I was there last October and the jokers had
definitlely been changed on all the regular spin poker machines, but
not the 1 spin deluxe and the 2 All Star spins which hadn't been
there that long. I just talked to a friend who thought there were 2
or 3 spin pokers there about 10 years ago, but any payout over $50
was a hand pay, so they weren't worth playing. When I said they have
only been there about 5 or 6 years, maybe what I remember is that
they changed the handpay requirement about 5 or 6 years ago.
As for the double royal on your birthday, they may still have the
Hi-Lo Royals game on Bally Gamemakers. That was the best game I saw
in 1998. I believe the game is worth 99.7985% on the base game. I
don't know if the Low Royal (65432s) will get paid double though.
Tomski came up with a similar return 99.7977%. The Wizard of Odds
only came up with 99.1286%. Hmm.

I did
communicate
with two other people in January 2007 and May 2007 who indicated
to me
that the games were still there and only the promotions had been
changed to limit the shirt bonus to one per person per night. I
don't
know if the double royal promotion is still there but even so it
wouldn't be worth much as the next best game was 15/9/4/4/3
deouces at
98.9%. :

The high/low royal game is still there but it is at the bar and they
disqualified all bar machines from all promotions while I was there in
March 2006. This was not because of this game but because some local
was getting numerous shirt bonuses by playing the 20 coin quarter
machines and getting a $50 bonus on every win of $50 or more.
I assumed that Draw Til U Win machines were in play the year they were
copyrighted but I wasn't actually looking for them in 1995 or 1996.

As for your message... Rainbow Club copywrite 1995? Vegas Club
copywrite 1997? When were these games actually put into the casino?
You didn't find the one at the Rainbow Club until we found it at
several other places in 1998. I had been in there several times
before 1998 and never saw it. The ones at the Vegas Club were
definitely not there when we checked in 98, but were there a couple
years later.I guess it's possible they were there more than once.As for Ely, I was there last October and the jokers had
definitlely been changed on all the regular spin poker machines, but
not the 1 spin deluxe and the 2 All Star spins which hadn't been
there that long.
Hmm.--- In vpFREE@yahoogroups.com, "dougreul" <dougreul@> wrote:

That comment by Hamstockman about Ely seems strange to me. I'd be
very happy to spend a month (or much longer) in Ely. It's a cute
little town right in the middle of a very senic area, I love it.
A month in Ely weasn't really that bad. It was worth about
$12-15K/month and until recently I could also make money playing
poker
on the internet, although the U.S. government put an end to that.
The
hunting and fishing in Ely is also excellent. I drove highway 50
many
times and in fact there was a great play in Eureka. The bar at the
Owl Inn had two $1 Draw Til U Win machines worth about $150/hr.>
