Ely Play Finally Dead

Agree, Skip. Before my son was born I had no problem spending weeks
at a good play. The pleasantness of the locale was never an issue.
The only thing that would give me pause was if there was significant
danger involved.

In 1993 I went to Poland several times for 3-weeks at a time for a
superb blackjack game I'd discovered. Warsaw isn't the most
beautiful city in the world, but I was mostly playing and sleeping
anyway. When I did take a walk, I rather enjoyed my surroundings.

In the late 90's I spent most of a month playing another excellent
blackjack game in Natchez, MS. Not a heck of a lot to do in
Natchez, but it was pleasant enough. I probably averaged 10
hours/day of blackjack.

Now I try to limit my trips to one week, though for a great play I'd
somehow find 2 weeks!

Everybody has different goals and preferences. I remember when

Doug

wrote a really great article in Dan's VP Times about the life of a
pro.He works very hard and for long hours. Few people here would

do it.

Most of the folks here (regardless of how skilled) play for

enjoyment

first and profit second (at best) and they wouldn't enjoy a month

in

Ely, I imagine. But if I was young and unmarried (or even old and
unmarried) , I would have been happy to camp out in that town for

a lot

longer than a month. Like Doug says, there's plenty of hunting and
fishing for those who like that, a great VP play seven days a

week, Low

crime rate, no smog, starry nights.. Not exactly hell on earth.

I only spent a very limited time in Ely, and your visits of a month
at a time make you in a better position to comment on Ely. I am
certain you liked the town, or you would have left. My visions of the
town were of many run down homes or ranches with many closed business
and boarded up buildings. I remember a closed hotel or two. The
Nevada Hotel http://www.hotelnevada.com may have some old charm, but
is years behind in casino amenities. I still remember the Moose head
watching me eat my lunch. The location of the town is very isolated
and with an average high temperature in January of below freezing, it
just is not a place I wish to visit again.

That comment by Hamstockman about Ely seems strange to me. I'd be
very happy to spend a month (or much longer) in Ely. It's a cute
little town right in the middle of a very senic area, I love it.

When I was in Ely in 2005 and 2006 it was a real boomtown. The mining
industry was going full bore and they were drilling for oil about 15
miles east of town. They had known it was there for years about
20,000 feet down but was only profitable when oil hit $50/barrel.
They were also building a pipeline to the refinery at Pioche in
anticipation of the oil. In addition they were building a new coal
powered power plant 30 miles north of town. There were so many people
in Ely that lodging was almost impossible to find and there was not
even standing room at the Hotel Nevada bar in the evening. The
bartender told me that houses that sold for $20,000 in 2001 were now
going for $200,000.

And the Moose Drool down at the Twisted Pine was excellent!

I have been to Ely twice. First time around 1981 or1982, not sure, but I am quite sure it was September. I flew there directly from S. Louisiana. Well, not quite direct, flew to Reno and then got on a flight to Salt Lake City that stopped once before Ely, rented a car and spent six nights at the Jailhouse Motel waiting to witness the last log at a wildcat well a few miles out of town. The last log is traditionally the velocity survey because it is the most likely to stick in the hole. 3:00 AM, temperature 26 deg. F. got my boss out of bed back in Dallas to report the bad news, but the crew got the tool unstuck. A SLC geologist was prepared to fly to LV on a private plane to express the logs to the 5 or 6 oil companies that had an interest in the well. I gave him the keys to my rental, found out the pilot was a licensed instructor, and as it was a Cessna model I was not checked out on so with his permission flew left seat to LV, same clothes I froze in on that
mountain that night I sweated in the 100+ degree heat in LV, shipped the logs, checked into a motel and slept some 12 hours straight!!
