Yep, it's gambling. But a fool and his money are quickly parted in
the casino (I'm not getting personal here, jack

In my book, and that of most proficient players, the right move is to
make the play that results in the best expected result ... not simply
the highest probability of a jackpot.

If you go for the 3 Royal hold you're not only going to be passing up
a LOT of high pairs, but considerable occasions where the pair would
improve to two pair, a flush, and a quad. The cost is going to be large.

Of course, there will be some games, such as 10/7 DB or All American,
where it's preferred to hold 3 RF cards in some cases rather than a
high pair. But in those cases a straight and a flush pay a premium
over the payouts of 9/6 Jacks.

So my advice, whether you play a little or a lot, is to keep the high
pair in 9/6 Jacks or Better.

By the way, jack ...

I've glossed over the fact that if you're not playing with some type
of tool (strategy card plus software), you're playing a little blind.
In fact, I've assumed that you were aware of correct Jacks strategy.

If you don't have a printed strategy and software at hand, I'll
recommend you pick up Frugal Video Poker software. It'll speed you on
your way to feeling that you're in command of your game.

Check out: http://www.frugalgambler.biz/

I wish you the best in your play!

This exchange reminds me of an experience I had last Thursday. I
was sitting at the bar in Terribles watching the Cardnials. The
fellow next to me was playing a 0.25, 5 hand bonus game and he was
dealt 4 to the royal and a high pair. He'd been lamenting the
beating he'd taken over the last 2 days dropping $1200 at the same
bartops. He asked me if he should hold the 4 to a royal. I have to
admit, I hesitated since this guy had been pretty volitile in the
short time I'd sat next to him and I didn't want to set him off. So
I gave him the correct play and plenty of caveats about chance.
Mercifully he hit 2 royals. He high fived me but then turned into a
total dick with the casino staff, demanding a comped dinner and
being harsh to the bar staff.

Sorry to be so long winded. Net; this fellow didn't really know
proper strategy and had dumped a load of cash although he did get
lucky. I think the only reason he considered holding the high pair
was the beating he'd been taking. The minor investment in some
training software could have made his experience significantly
better. The story does have a happy ending. I saw him a little
later at a $5 slot machine so I suspect the staff at Terribles had
the last laugh.

When RF pays only 4000 coins, it is marginally better to hold the
pair. When a progressive is involved, and RF Value increases to
around 6000 coins, RF3 becomes preferable. Due to EV of pair
remaining constant, while EV of RF3 increases.

One way to assess the cost of "going for the royal" is to look at a
payback comparison with the RF value set to that of a simple flush. I
did this in winpoker and the results are as folows:

AQJT returns 7.87
AKQJ returns 8.19

High pair (JJ,QQ,KK,AA) returns 7.68

So, overall it costs you nothing even if you don't hit the RF.

Normally, most things that Harry writes make a lot of sense to me.

In this case, however, I simply cannot picture how a high pair can
improve to a flush.

Perhaps you meant to say full house?

attempt to recoup lost bankroll.

This is just a personal opinion, but I hope it helps.

Hey Babe -
This is almost the classic question of EV vs. gamble.

I stepped into this loaded discussion when I joined the group about 2
years ago. The RS policy was somewhat new and little did I know it
was one of RS's favorite peeves which led to many flame
wars/"escalated arguments" before my time.

My stance then that, due to the very slight difference in EVs,
that "taking the gamble" costs the holder of the 3RF only a few
pennies more "penalty" than the holder of the high pair, even on $1
coin machines.

I suggested that LUCK (another flashpoint subject) favored the
prepared hold, so "spend" those few pennies to let LUCK of the Royal
draw happen to you. You'll never get a Royal holding the pair (nor
str8s nor flushes), but you will profit by holding High pair instead
of 3RF: enough to play another few hands per day.

If posts for and against this position of Hold the 3RF was any
indication, I lost the argument. Plus, I think my sanity was even
questioned (!!!) That hurt. It wasn't fun. I was almost afraid to
post for a few months.

So without opening it up for the same old arguments, my conclusion
then and now is:

Hold what you wanna hold. (it's your money!)
Don't feel you have to justify how you play.
CERTAINLY don't think you have to convince anyone else to play it
one way or the other.

We exchange a lot of facts & opinions under the banner of educating
newbies. But when we try to be winners of arguments, by the time the
gloves come off, we've lost our newbie audience.

In THIS group, this subject is DANGEROUS. (IF words can be considered
dangerous - HA!)

I recommend a search of the old posts before continuing the thread...
search string "3RF" or "3 card Royal". go back a year or two if you
have the patience.
Plus: as far as a "flavor" for further discussion:

May I recommend that the math involved be saved for other threads: I
am fully cognisant of the math involved and whether the high pair EV
is 0.0087 higher or it's .0187 higher makes no difference to me. It's
higher, but not by "much". We can all read and follow a strategy card.

Also, please don't brand me an idiot for my opinions. Stretch your
mind and try to see another viewpoint. Your play and your bankroll
aren't being threatened.

Cheers!

Hey, Mark,

You're still my Man! I enjoy your lighthearted "fun" approach,
mostly because my attitude to vp is quite similiar. I do play as
close to perfectly as I can, MOST of the time. At other times, NOT
OFTEN, for whatever reason, I just take a flyer and try for the big
hand, regardless of the proper strategy. I KNOW the proper
stategy...I just don't care. As Mark said, It's my money so leave
me alone. Please, don't bother to lecture me either on how many
pennies I'm wasting on my single line .25 denom FP vp.

Mark, I always enjoy your posts. Hope to read about your SUCCESSFUL
December trip after it happens.

Best to you. Babe

I have had 3 royals in the last 4 months holding 3 to the royal and
dumping the high pair. I ve also had a few SFs and FLs doing this.
The only time I will dump the 3 to the royal is if I have 3 aces and
it's a bonus game. On JOB they would be gone as fast as I could hit
the buttons.
I know this may never happen again but that's VP. I also know that I
would never play enough hands and convert those high pairs into quads
to make up for the money I would have lost buy playing perfect
strategy.
Even though we know the percentages for every hand sometimes the
machine just won't cooperate. It's nice to cash in when the machine
doesn't play by the rules we set up and does something stupid like
filling in the royal..
Please don't lecture me on the errors of my ways. I play perfect
stratagey most of the time but I will stray on occasion. There is
still luck involved no matter how much math we apply to it.
Another example I had was playing DDB. I was playing for over 2 hours
on this machine. I had $60 into the machine. Ups and downs but no
real wild streaks either way. It was actually getting boring. I was
dealt a 3-ace FH. Against all the rules I dumped the pair, kept the
aces, and drew ace-2 for $500. Just another example of the machine
not playing by the rules.

                   Hi Tghysel,

I agree with much of what you say, but believe

me, we are very much in the minority, on this board. To me "FUN" is
the only reason to expend my hard earned money. If I have
more "fun" by occasionally playing counter to correct strategy, well
that's my choice.
I guess I've also been very "lucky" (another buzz-word) because most
of the time, at the end of the trip, I have more in my pocket than
I had at the start. I also know that this can change at anytime,
but so far, over the last 10 years, when I've played basically
according to the correct strategy, it hasn't.

Actually, you played this hand CORRECTLY, according

to BDWP. In DDB (even in DB) if you come in with a pat FH, which
includes trip Aces, you dump the little pair.

Please continue to enjoy yourself by playing anyway that pleases you

the original question is 3 to the royal compared to a pair.

One way to assess the cost of "going for the royal" is to look at a
payback comparison with the RF value set to that of a simple flush. I
did this in winpoker and the results are as folows:

AQJT returns 7.87
AKQJ returns 8.19
KQJT returns 13.83

High pair (JJ,QQ,KK,AA) returns 7.68

So, overall it costs you nothing even if you don't hit the RF.

It is nice to hear that you have been able to connect on so many 3 to
a royal holds, since this is a 1 in 1081 chance, but as we all know,
anything can and does happen. One thing to think about when you keep
a High pair in JOB about 1/6 of the time it turns into a 2 pair and
pays double, this is quite a bit of the value of a high pair and
depending on the exact 3 to the royal that anyone chooses to keep over
the high pair they are giving up between 0.34 units to 1.44 units each
and every time. I dont mind if you choose this option because, like
someone else said you are helping subsidise the good games so they can
stick around longer and that is good for me, so in that respect, Thank
You very much.

Take care

First off, let me say I emphatically agree with Babe's comment. This
is supposed to be fun, not a job, so play however you want,
regardless of what anybody else thinks or says about it. The only
valid reason for discussing it is to help other people make up their
minds about the most fun way to handle this particular situation. If
I disagree with somebody's reasoning on this hand, it's nothing
against you personally and it should in no way change what you do,
it's just a point I wanted to make for others who may read this post.

Okay, that's out of the way. Now let me wax theoretical here.

I think what's being missed by the arguments above is the hands you
don't see. It's kind of like a duckhunter who consistently takes pot
shots at single birds on the very edge of his range, because he
occasionally bags one this way. He never sees the flock of 12 who
would have landed directly in front of him, but were scared away by
the gun shot.

The odds of hitting a royal from 3 are one in 1081. The odds of
hitting a royal from an entirely new hand are one in 35,000 to
45,000, depending on the game. Thus, if you give up more than 32-42
extra hands to make this play, you are actually decreasing the number
of royals you hit. Since you give up a certain return of your bet to
make this play, and since a 99% game will on average give you 99
hands for the cost of one bet, this doesn't look like it will improve
your overall number of royals. You will play fewer hands for same
money and as a result will have fewer royals. (In fact, that's a
little over-simplified but the bottom line is more ER = more royals
in the long run, assuming losing massive amounts of money would make
you play less - otherwise you should simply go for the royal on every
hand.)

Further, I would argue that, NO MATTER WHAT YOUR OBJECTIVE, this is
the wrong move (assuming that there are other VP games available with
higher variances and higher ERs, which is usually the case). Even if
your objective is to score more jackpots and even if you're willing
to give up ER to do it, this is the wrong way to achieve that goal.

The reason I say this is that, mathematically, what you are doing
with this move is to hugely increase your variance on that hand,
while giving up ER. However, there are numerous other VP games
available that are willing to offer you a higher ER to induce you to
accept a higher variance. So, it's kind of like Tom Sawyer getting
all the other kids to pay him to "let" them help him white-wash the
fence, or auto salvage junkyards that charge you to remove that non-
running car from your back yard and then sell it for parts – why
should you pay for something that other people are willing to pay you
for?

Note: "increasing your variance" is mathematician lingo for "going
after more jackpots."

So, if your objective is to go after more jackpots, what you should
do is to play this hand by the book. Then, every time that happens,
immediately go to another game like Shockwave or Triple Deuces (with
their jackpot cycles of 12,000 and 4500 hands and variances in the
50s-60s) and play 10 or 12 hands, again strictly according to the
rules for max ER. Exactly how many hands you can play can be
calculated based on relative variances. In this way you will achieve
the same increased chance of hitting a jackpot, but you will get a
higher, not a lower, ER.

It is nice to hear that you have been able to connect on so many 3

to

a royal holds, since this is a 1 in 1081 chance, but as we all

know,

anything can and does happen. One thing to think about when you

keep

a High pair in JOB about 1/6 of the time it turns into a 2 pair and
pays double, this is quite a bit of the value of a high pair and
depending on the exact 3 to the royal that anyone chooses to keep

over

the high pair they are giving up between 0.34 units to 1.44 units

each

and every time. I dont mind if you choose this option because,

like

someone else said you are helping subsidise the good games so they

can

stick around longer and that is good for me, so in that respect,

Thank

YES I AGREE, I HIT 4 ACES PLUS KICKER TONIGHT AFTER DUMPING THE PAIR AND HOLDING 3 ACES FOR 500 $$$

As to the last example, it sounds like the machine played by the
rules. In DDB, you're supposed to dump the FH in favor of 3 Aces.
The ACES are worth a boat load (no pun intended) more than the Full
House.
