I was playing video poker yesterday and was seated next to a man ( who obviously had played before) and his slightly drunk wife , who hadn't played before. After listening to the conversation for a while, I realized that although he said he plays a lot , he really didn't know what he was doing. He explained to his wife that you are playing against the machine and that the machine ( dealer) gets a hand and you have to beat that hand. The wife asked "How do you know what the dealer has?" and he said you don't because he never shows his hand.
He also said that every hand is programmed, once you hit deuces they tend to repeat, you have to find a hot machine, etc. I pretty much dismissed his input. As I was playing NSUD, I was dealt 3c 6c 7c 10d Jd. I held the 10 J. He said I should hold the 3 6 7. I told him no, RF2 is better than SF3di. He said "yeah, you're right". Well, after a few minutes, I decided to check my strategy card, just to re inforce my vp superiority. Well, SF3di is better than RF2 by a lot.
A couple of lessons learned:
1) You can always learn, no matter how annoying the person is.
2) Don't let your annoyance at someone get in the way of making ( or checking) the right play
3) Even if you have played a game for a million years, it doesn't hurt to do a quick review before you play
4) Strategy cards are great, but only if you pull them out of your pocket.
