Year end VP report/forecast

Greetings from Las Vegas, Home of the Monthly vpFREE Lunch :

Susan and I had another profitable VP year in 2002. We play
about three hours of VP daily (EVERY DAY), spreading our
play among about ten LV casinos, and we've never had a losing
year.

Last year (2002) we had 62 royals (a few of the nickel, $1 and $2
variety, but mostly the 25c type) and after one day in 2003 we're
on track for 730 royals in 2003.

Congratulations on both a winning year, and a winning newsgroup.

Being a math type, I couldn't help doing the arithmetic : )

Let's see now, 2 people x 3 hours x 600?? hands x 365 days =
1,314,000 plays/year. Divide by 62, that's a royal every 21,194
plays.

How do you do that? I presume you play a fair amount of triple play,
etc. Which game do you play the most?

1,314,000 plays/year. Divide by 62, that's a royal every 21,194
plays. How do you do that?

Well, there must truly be a balance in the world, for this was surely
our worst year ever playing vp in Las Vegas! Between Donna and me, we
only achieved 16 royals of which half were at the 5 cent level, and we
have always been quarter players up until the huge losses this year. We
even managed to lose hundreds and hundreds playing pennies on 50 and 100
plays during royal scratch card promotions and never hit a single royal
on them! And yet it appears that Tom and Susan were hitting them twice
as fast as normal cycles and are already off to a great start for 2003!
Congratulations! I manage to find great plays, write about them and use
every coupon and advantage known to mankind and yet I can't seem to make
them work for us. We probably lost more match play coupons than ever
this year too. Go figure!

But, all that said, while we may have been unlucky at cards this past
year, it was the most blessed of all years for us with the birth of our
son, Zachary. His college fund certainly didn't grow much, but we'll
get'em this year!

Hi everyone. I play in Atlantic City about three times a week.
   I won't give my year-end totals, but I lost about $1,500 on the gambling end with cashback compensating somewhat.
   My family had our annual holiday gift exchange yesterday. Since we do gag gifts and such, I gave them stuff the casinos gave me all year. It took me 4 hours to wrap it all, and it filled the trunk of my car and a good part of the back seat. They were amazed at the quality of some of the stuff. After we were done opening, my mother asked me how much all this stuff cost in losses. Everyone was astounded at my answer.
   2003 didn't start so great, but it wasn't too bad either. I stopped by Trump Plaza to pick up my first gift of the new year. I was in $150 when the machine started hitting, and I left only $25 behind.
   A happy, prosperous and royal-filled new year to all.

Tom and Susan, like most of us local regulars, play much faster than than. More like 1000 HPH. So, their luck isn't that unusual, except that Tom always seems to get 4 ducks as soon as I sit down, and Susan somehow manages to save her quads for when she moves up to dollar DB.

My wife and I also had a profitable, statistically normal year (101.3%, which includes cashback, coupons and freeplay, but not comps). Beats working for money. 9 winning months, 3 ugly months. Somehow managed to lose money playing Jokers this year, but made up for it good luck on Deuces and PE. Average luck on DB. We average one or two hours of play/day.

Seems like you have a good way of easily keeping track
of your monthly/yearly winnings and/or losses. Can you
share with us how or what method(s) you use for doing
so?

I'm fairly adept with good Ol Microsoft Excel - I use the "Filter" and "Autosum" features to sort out results from individual games, casinos, etc.

Do you bring a notepad with you to jot down your play
results? Have separate pockets/envelopes for wins and
losses?
Is it necessary to include the machine
numbers/IDs/tags besides the individual games and
casinos? In short, what other information is
necessary to present to my accountant during Income
Tax time?

WE have NEVER had:
-Anything above a full house in Pick 'em.
-A natural royal flush on DW
-4 deuces on Loose Deuces
-A sequential royal flush on one that matters or not
-Sequential ACES in Aces Bonus Poker
-A dealt royal flush
-5 card discard royal flush (my wife did have one of those several years
ago.)
-More than 1 royal at a time on multi-line machines other than Spinpoker
-A first royal to ever attempt getting the second during a double pay on
second royal promotion
-4 aces on Super Aces (my wife has)
-More than $2 in actual cash on any paycheck cashing promotion
-Never had any scratch card in any promotion worth more than $10
-Never won anything in any drawing
-Never won 1st place in any slot or vp tourney (I think around 6th was
best ever)

We also never filled in a royal from a four card dealt royal this past
year on over 400 attempts. (We have done it many times in past years but
zero for 2002.)

Nope. It all goes into/out of the wallet.

According to the regs, yes. Do I bother? Nah. Do some people do this? Yeah.

Every Winter, a prolonged thread on this subject breaks out in just about every forum. There is much arguement and little agreement. Usually the debate degrades to the point where the constitutionality of income tax comes into question, and things go rapidly downhill from there. I can only say this: all MY accountant wanted was my jackpot tax forms and my net win. Yours may want more.

Scott, this is just plain scary for this to happen to a knowledgeable local. How much do you play? Were you a mass-murderer in a previous life or something? If you don't play much, I can at least offer some encouragement in that:

1) I've endured a number of pathetic, mult-month, 300,000-hand funks. And then gone on ridiculous winning streaks. The main thing I've learned since moving to Vegas (three years ago) is that the game is even more volitile than I ever imagined.

2) My wife's luck was similar for her first couple of years, now she's as lucky as anybody else. Last month she got a Pick'Em royal, of all things. There is hope for us all.

On the other hand, at some point, regardless, all this bad luck has got to take the fun out of playing. How about a nice game of blackjack?

PS: Are you like me, and when you are losing, the person sitting NEXT to you wins like crazy? If so, where do you play and when? :^)
