Regarding the SWA Credit card--since you have to make at least ONE
purchase befroe you can get the points--does anyone know if the "1 year"
begins at the date of that purchase OR when you apply/receive the Credit card?

I certainly stand corrected.
In this case, if you apply by following the
link it appears the free flight is a sure thing (as long as the
annual fee isn't an issue to you). SW credits do expire in 12 months,
so plan ahead as free seats are now capacity controlled and are
booked well in advance (I already have my Christmas and New Year's
reservations on Southwest).
SWA flight credits are valid for 2 years, not 12 months.
As far as the $59 annual fee goes... I've had success with some cards
in getting this pro-rated and refunded when I cancelled the card (after
the miles hit my account). Not a guarantee with this offer, but even
if you get stuck with the entire $59 it's still a great deal for a
flight that's worth a minimum of $200.
FYI: I've had a SWA Chase Visa for years and have never had an issue
with flight credits posting. I'm very confident this deal is legit...
