Here in Washington a number of casinos are offering tournaments
where the prize is a free entry to the WSOP plus (usually) some
extra money to cover transportion, room, etc. There must be 8-10 such
offers in this area. Multiply that by the entire country, there may be
thousands of similar tournaments. So the huge growth in WSOP entries
surely has a lot to do with these promotions. Many entrants, probably
most, did NOT have to pony up the $10,000. Plus, these people must be
reasonably skilled, I'd assume, to win a local tournament. I'm
guessing it will be very difficult for anyone to be a repeat winner.
XVP: WSOP Entry Fee
Not to mention all of the online tournaments for entries in the WSOP for
players from all over the world. I think some of the winners to these
satellites think twice and cash in their win rather than take the pot shot.
I would.
