With the upcoming presidential elections, those who have recently moved to
NV got quite an upgrade in voting power. Due to our Electoral College system,
one person does not equal one vote.
Long story short, Business Week (BW) did an article on 6/12, "The Few Decide
for the Many", which included 2 maps of electoral votes by state. Why 2
maps? One was the official record. The other map was redistributed to reflect a
state's real influence.
Many states are already classified as already voting Democratic or
Republican so their votes are taken for granted.
The votes of the undecided states are the ones the candidates have to work
for. So their issues & influence are out of wack with their size & that's why
candidates end up talking about podunk issues that affect only a small
proportion of the population.
For the benefit of board members, I put the stats of the 2 maps on a
spreadsheet with additional columns for "% change" & "Dem/Rep/U" to show voting
preference. For methodology for redistribution, read the article.
Note that Nevada is #2 as far % change due to the weighted tally. BW's 8/9
article, "Kerry's Toughest Crowd", mentioned that Las Vegas is the key to NV.
That's why you'll find him in Las Vegas more than you will in Boston in the
days leading up to the election. Sorry haaljo.

So what does this have to do with VP?
Know that feeling you get when you've played 6 hrs to earn 1 drawing ticket
& you stand in line behind the guy with the coupon for 10 drawing tickets for
new members & he gets called for the $1000 for doing nothing? Sort of the
same feeling.
