XVP: Valet parking-- when to tip?

OK, I may be the only person on the planet who has never used valet
parking in Las Vegas. So, if I ever do decide to use it-- do you tip
when you drop the car off? When you retrieve the car? Both times? And
what is the suggested amount?

As a starting point, a dollar when you drop the car, a dollar when you
get it back (more if they're really fast, none if they take more than
about 10 minutes).

This is extremely unusual. I don't know anyone who tips when they drop off
the car, or who stiffs them when they pick it up unless the service is
downright rude.

I do it for several reasons:

-if the attendants aren't sharing tips, the ones working to shift
where people are more likely to drop their cars than pick them up are
getting stiffed.

-when I just leave my car keys to an attendant, tipping is a way of
hinting that I expect them to take care of my car. The last thing I
want is for the valet to damage it (happened to me once).

-since I typically have to wait a lot less when dropping my car than
when picking it up, I consider the service to be better when I drop
it.

Just a matter of habit, I guess.

That being said, I won't let a valet attendant touch my car - I'm
pretty sure that some of them would struggle with the big V8 and the
stick shift, and would damage the clutch. I have no worry with my
wife's car, which is much easier to drive.

It all depends on what kind of car you drive and how you want it to be taken care of. If I pull up in a run of the mill car I tip a small amount (a couple of bucks) when dropping it off and another five or so when picking it up. If I pull up in the Viper and want it left out front I would tip $20 when dropping it off and another $10 or $20 when picking it up depending on where they left it. In the case of the Viper, I ask them to leave it up front in plain view.

If you take the Viper to AC here's the icing on the cake. You escape
the parking tax, $4.00. They keep the house ticket and you get the
other half. A call to valet has your car ready when you go for pickup.

Few in Las Vegas tip when dropping off a vehicle unless making a special request like asking
the valet to hold the vehicle out front for a short while. If your goal is to do what the valet
might expect, you are on firm ground not tipping when you drop your vehicle off. The valets
rarely receive a tip when a vehicle is dropped off. You will not be sneered at if you don't offer
one. A $2 tip is pretty standard here when your vehicle retrieved and brought back to you.
Again, you will not be sneered at. Hope this helps.

What do you consider to be a reasonable wait for your car to be
retrieved by valet?
