XVP: Tipping at bartops

I'm looking at Bob Bartop for a good answer to this one.

In a regular bar (i.e., outside of Vegas and paying for drinks), if I am
paying the bartender in cash, I toss down a buck or two after getting my
drinks, then I walk away from the bar. When I am sitting at the bar, I will
have a tab open, and settle up at the end of my time there, and tip at that
point.

In Vegas at a machine, I toss a buck or two at the cocktail waitress when
the drink arrives.

In Vegas at a bartop, I receive a drink for free, and a little cup is placed
in front of me with a torn receipt inside. Assuming I would like to tip a
buck or two a drink (depending on service and what I'm ordering), where do I
tip and what is the appropriate time? I ask because I have tended to put
down a dollar bill on the bar just like I would at a normal bar, and
sometimes it has seemed like the bartenders have just left it on the bar for
some time, occasionally even getting me a second round before collecting
their tips.

Without getting into the issue of tipping bartenders on jackpots and how
that relates to handpay tips, what is an appropriate way to tip in order to
keep the liquor flowing and the bartender happy?

Put your tip in the cup. The bartender will usually let your tips accumulate in the cup until you leave.

Or he will pick it up when his or her shift ends while you are still at the bar.

I really don't do the bar thing much, unless I'm playing video poker. I'm probably not a good source for advice. I seldom drink more than two cokes, especially if I'm driving. I put a dollar for each one in the tip glass that he leaves.

Sometimes I feel a little wild, and order a Shirley Temple instead. I might leave $2 for that.

Thanks to all for the simple answer.

Bob, I guess I just assumed that you were an EV+ drinker, i.e., included the
alcohol as part of the EV of playing. Oh well, blasts that assumption out
of the water. What's your rationale for liking bartops over other
machines? Or is it just the alliteration of the name?

When my grandfather, Giuseppe Bartopariniloupolosky, came here from the old country and landed at Ellis Island, he had to shorten his last name so they could fit it on his new player's card.

I'm glad he had that foresight, because I like to play a lot of weekly drawings.
