Sorry this happened to you -- I had the misfortune of having my car vandalized in a school parking lot one night while at a meeting there -- didn't even notice until I drove off and felt a breeze, and realized the right rear window had been broken.
Fortunately, I didn't have anything in the car to be stolen -- so I don't know why this even happened, except maybe they THOUGHT they could find something, who knows.
Since they have your laptop and you say there was personal info on it, you may need to take precautions against identify theft -- I'm not sure what these would be at this point, since I'm not very good at protecting myself either, but certainly advising your bank and credit card companies to take precautions on your accounts would be prudent -- and who knows what else?
