XVP - The Producers

David Hasselhof will only be with The Producers until March 31!! No word on
who (if any) name star will replace him. Also ticket prices for the show
are quite high, with the best orchestra seats going for about $148. Side
orchestra seats are $128. There is a Sat. matinee and nightly performances.

Some characters in costume were inside and outside Paris/Bally's today, and
some handed out coupons for free drinks if you buy show tickets.

I managed to see it last weekend on a comp and frankly was disappointed. Unlike Phantom
at the Venetian which works wonderfully well telescoped to 100 minutes, this production
feels rushed and shrill. Mel Brooks isn't exactly the mastter of subtlety, but what has been
cut helped give the show in its original full length form, pacing and nuances that in this
production are completely lost. The high prices that are being charged do not feel
warranted as I felt there really isn't a major star turn in any of the performances or a
dazzling set piece such as there is in Phantom. One really has to be a huge fan of Mr
Hasselhof's to lay out the bucks to see this. He does work hard and camps up a storm but
he still leaves one with the impression that he modelled his character more on Gaston
from Beauty and The Beast doing a tribute to La Cage aux Folles.

I enjoyed The Producers in Vegas more than when I saw
it on Broadway with Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick.
I paid more in NYC for worse seats. I enjoy the format
of eliminating the intermission and it seemed to make
it a tighter show for me.

I would not miss Hasselhoff at all. Get another performer
and give the salary cut benefit to lower prices. The star
performers are as good as the originals and deserve more
credit.

I never could understand why this show earned so many
Tonys. There have been many many better musicals but
maybe not that year.

Do price go up when his run is over
as one would reasonably expect?
