by William Poundstone, relatively light reading which talks about the
relationship between gambling and investing. Thorp figures prominently

I THINK I stand corrected - I can't find anything on Google that confirms either way, except if you look up Edward O. Thorpe and Associates, you find a company in Newport CA -- that I'm pretty sure is him, as much of his math work was applied to investments instead of gambling.
But of course, without contacting the company, I could be looking at an old web site that is not up to date, so I'm not absolutely certain.
