XVP - Texas Hold'Em Software

Any opinions on the Texas Hold 'Em software choices? I like to
participate in live play in between VP sessions. Thanks for your input!

The Wilson Turbo programs were excellent when
I used them in the early 90's, and I've heard they
are still the best available.

You could practice in the play money games at
online casinos.

I would only spend time in the play money games in order to simply get
the basics of the game down. After a couple hours, you'll know how
online play works. From that point on, as a newbie, I would stop
playing the 'funny money' games. You'll develop bad habits of playing
too many hands and playing too loose. If these habits carry over to
low limit real money games, you will quickly lose your stake.

The latest version of Turbo Texas Hold'em rocks, so do most of the books from twoplustwo.com

I second these recommendations. Wilson Turbo Texas Hold'em version
for limit poker is great. Tournament and No Limit, not so great.
As far as Two Plus Two publishing goes, Getting Started In Hold'em by
Ed Miller is a wonderful introduction. Well written, simple and can
bring you up to a break even game by following simple. Once that
material is mastered, Small Stakes Hold'em, again by Ed Miller, is
probably the definative work on the matter at this point. Ed Miller
was a software engineer for Microsoft, got bored a couple years ago
and started playing online. Ed has now made his full time income
from playing poker (and writing books lol). I like his perspective
as this is someone who has made the leap to full time play recently
and is relatively new to the game. This gives him a perspective
common to beginners. Mastering the material in this book will
definately result in +EV limit game. If no limit is your game of
choice, then Getting Started in Hold'em, followed by Harrington on
Hold'em. This is another 2+2 published book and technically is for
tournaments, however volume 1 deals with beginning stages of
tournament which is played similar to no-limit ring game. If you are
new to the game certainly your intro game should be 2/4 limit in the
casino, however you need to be able to move up to a higher limit
pretty quickly as 2/4 is tough to beat rake and tip dealer, etc.
Internet is best way to learn, however as previously mentioned, stay
away from play money and .,01/.02 games as this encourages some very
poor habits.

What could a Microsoft programmer possibly know about poker?
