XVP - Strictly Slots January issue & Dancer's column

Has anyone had the opportunity to read Bob's article in Strictly
Slots ? It was a great article and I really admire how well Bob kept
his cool with his neighbor. I have had similar incidents not at the
level of play he is doing but while playing Dollars and I have to
admit that I did not handle it as well as he did. Just curious if
others have had any type of experiences like that?

Or have you ever been in the middle of a complicated play just to
finally figure out the right strategy and not get anything on the
redraw...then have someone comment that you should have done it
differently?

Missdeuces said some nice things about my Strictly Slots column. Thank
you.

My only complaint is that she chose to label it "XVP". IMO the subject
matter is definitely about video poker.

The closest I came to that was when I was playing Deuces wild.
The person sitting next to me was dealt Kd Qd Jd Td 5d and asked me what he should do.
I told him that it was not a good idea for me to offer advice, I could only tell him what I would do when I am dealt such a hand. I then asked him if he was a gambler and that the answer to that question would tell him what to do.
He kept the flush, and I just gave him a weak smile.

I haven't read the article, but try playing blackjack sometime. You
have advice coming from everyone at the table, the dealer, your
friends, you name it.

There is nothing funnier than some drunk telling you you should have
doubled that 12 against the dealers 7! Thanks for the advice!

When people want advice and I feel generous with my basic strategy, I
say 'I always do this' or something similar.

I have removed the "XVP" from the subject line, as Bob objected to
it.

I too read the article and was nothing short of astounded at how
polite Bob was to an intrusive and RUDE stranger. I know I would
would not have exhibited the patience that he did.

I have had several experiences where other players assumed that I
wanted the benefit of their unsolicted expertise. Invariably, these
"experts" are truly clueless ploppies. Usually, I smile vaguely or
just ignore them. If they persist, I use Bob's method and tell them
that I must concentrate on the game. If that doesn't work, I
finally tell them to be quiet or I will call a slot supervisor. As
a last resort, if the situation has really become unpleasant, I will
move away.

Several times, I have been "advised" not to play a particular
machine because "someone just hit a RF/DEuces/Aces" etc. I consider
this to be an invitation to play the machine immediately. A few
times this resulted in another jackpot, much to the consternation of
my advisors.

Since I feel that my VP knowledge is superior to most of the players
I encounter who offer "advice", I never pay heed to their comments,

Conversely, if someone asks me what they should hold on a particular
hand, I will tell them what I would do were it my hand. Before
giving them any advice, I recite a disclaimer stating that, even
though this is the correct play, it may not work out well in this
instance. If they persist in asking me for advice, after the first
time, I will tell them politely, that I must concentrate on my own
game. I will also suggest that they purchase WP or Frugal.

Generally, I've found that most players will back off of foisting
unwanted conversation in your direction, if you're both civil and
firm in answering them.

The same has happen to me. Someone will tell me "I just hit a royal
or deuces or aces", etc on that machine and I smile and tell them
congratulations. Then proceed to sit down to play. Many times I
have hit a jackpot on it and the previous person sometimes gets so
angry they start slamming away on things and cursing under their
breath.

My standard reply is "Great the machine must be Hot"
If they say they have lost a bundle and I should avoid the machine my reply is "Great the machine must be due"

I have discovered after many years of playing that all machines are either Hot or Due .

in "Strictly Slots".)

======================================

BD's Column in the January, 2006 SS magazine, addressed the fact
that, when he was playing VP, he was actually "working".

He went on to relate an incident when, while playing $20.00 NSU (on
a double point day) a woman, whom he had not seen before, sat down
next to him, and began playing $2.00 9/6DDB, ONE coin at time. She
began to question BD aboit the proper play for various hands. He
said that he politely told her that he didn't know, since the
correct play was different when playing one coin instead of five
coins. He then told her that she would be much better off playing
five coins at a lower denom.

She didn't take his advice but beligerently kept saying that
he "must know the correct play because he is was playing so fast".
Finally, he told her that he couldn't talk to her anymore as he
was "working" and had to concentrate on his own play. She argued
with him some more, stating that he was "gambling" not working. He
finally stated that she would have to figure out her own hands, w/o
his assistance. She left then, after telling him how "rude" he
was. He said that this was a desirable outcome, from his point of
view.

The rest of the column dealt with the fact that when he's playing,
he IS working, and he cannot do his job properly, while coping with
the distraction of helping other people with their play.

AS I said in an earlier post, according to BD's version of this
encounter, he was extremely patient (with a total stranger) and she
was very aggressive and rude.

That's a synopsis of the column, as I read it. I'm sure that if I
misconstrued anything, that someone will correct me.

Babe,

Thanks, prior to your posting I could only surmize what had been
written and various peoples responses kind of gave a clue that another
person was involved. However their responses did not reflect how Bob
handled the situation nor what the specific situation was.

Thanks for being a light in the dark.

I don't have an anecdote of that scenario, but I'll pass on my wife's
experience this weekend in AC:

She was playing 9/6 Jacks alongside a couple who were playing the
JW-5K variant found in AC (97.2% ER). They were playing "by
committee", husband standing behind his wife, conferring in some
detail before each draw.

Bev was disconcerted when the guy would let out an occasional slight
disapproving grunt after one of her holds - particularly when she
would break a 4-cd inside straight.

But, gentle spirit that she is, she took it in stride ... up until the
guy snidely muttered to his wife "she doesn't know what she's doing".

Only Bev's sense of common decency saved the guy from emasculation
