XVP: Southwest DING Fares

Just to add a little more information on Southwest
Rapid Award vouchers...

It's being reported on flyertalk.com that those free
Rapid Award flight vouchers some people sell on Ebay
are being yanked from auction. Apparently it is
against Southwest rules to sell your free airline
voucher since they are considered to have no cash
value.

All Rapid Awards are valid for 12 months from the date
of issue. Southwest is strict about this policy. So
Rapid Reward vouchers do expire, but for a $50 fee you
can put your reward back into your account if you
can't use it by the expiration date. Also if you have
expired award vouchers, you can also extend that award
for a $50 fee.

I have multiple free trips on SWA to use as well but I earned them when they
offered 1 1/2 credits for each leg booked online. Thus a roundtrip earned
you 3 credits on way the 16 needed for a freebie. More if there was a promo.
However, SWA no longer offers extra credit for booking online since most
people that fly SWA book online. (The extra credits were given to entice
people to book online - mission accomplished.) That means you have fly 8
roundtrips in 12 months to earn a free flight and then you have 12 months to
use it or lose it.

I luv SWA but their rapid rewards program is now basically out of reach for
the bulk of travelers who won't fly anywhere near 8 times a year. I actually
just booked a flight on USAir to DC rather than on SWA to Baltimore because
SWA is longer such a draw, the fare was the same and DC is more convenient
for me.

I have multiple free trips on SWA to use as well but I earned them

you 3 credits on way the 16 needed for a freebie. More if there was

a promo.

Flying from Houston, SWA does not offer many good deals because they
apparently don't need to; the planes always seem full. I have booked
my next trip to Vegas on America West. First time I have ever flown
them. We'll see. I can actually book America West (senior fare over 62
gives a 5% discount) cheaper than I can book a ding fare and there are
no increased prices when you book close to the time of flight. That is
a huge plus. When SWA was giving double credits I was able to earn a
companion pass, but no more. If the America West trip works out I
guess they will become my new mistress, ending a long running love
affair with SWA.

I like SW because you can change your mind umpteen times and there

is no fee

for changing a booking. Most other airlines charge up to $100.

I like SW because they sent me to a special security screening because
I changed a flight to San Diego and switched it to a flight from Las
Vegas to Philadelphia. Don't all terrorists do that. Nah, it must have
been my I "Heart" Saddam sticker on my carry on bag.

Hi! Let me add a quick "me too", here.

Although we use our "card" a lot, and we get a fair amount
of "hotel" credits. We end up with something like 4-5 free round-
trips/year, a lot better than if we went with American AAdvantage,
and, American does not have non-stops from where we are to LV.

Uhhh...also, I don't get any advantage "hawking/shilling" for SWA
here. We just find them easy and convenient to use.

Beware of HP - They charge a $100 change fee thus unless it's a refundeable fare or there is absolutely no chance of changing your reservation, I would stay with Southwest. Also, they are very stingy with award seats. I ahve been on many flights with a number of open seats but no award seats unless u are ready to use twice the miles to get the seats. While southwest will start capacity control in february hopefully they will be mor eliberal than america west with award seats. Also, WN has just increased the period for getting awards to 24 months.
