XVP Rental car claim

My rental car mishap ( road debris punctured the radiator) occurred on 7/2/06. I called on Monday, July 17th to inquire but haven’t heard back. Do these claims generally take a long time? I think there is going to be a battle over Loss of Use charges. It seems silly for me to keep calling to find out how much they are going to gouge me.

On a related, non VP topic, I rented a vehicle in Minneapolis for business in June. The gas tank wasn’t quite full. I could either go back half a mile to the counter or just head out on my way. After working all day and getting in to Minneapolis from Detroit, I decided to just go. I ended up putting in more gas than I could have possibly used so I decided to send a note to Dollar. When I looked at the rental receipt, it shows that I drove 683 miles. Tough to do in 20 hours.

So, I have learned a couple of things about rental cars. 1 – settle any dispute as soon as you can, preferably right at the rental car location. 2 – rental car records aren’t very accurate. If you want to dispute gas consumption, the milage record isn’t going to help. 3 – rental car companies take the IRS approach. You are wrong/guilty unless you can prove otherwise. Even them, they will try to make getting restitution difficult enough so that you just give up. 4 – Rental car counter clerks are of the same make up as the counter help at the Harrah’s Total Rewards Club booth.

I just rented a car in Indianapolis and the security guard on the way out
had me verify that the gas gauge read full. First time I've ever been asked
to verify.

If your damage is being handled under coverage afforded you by your
credit card company, my experience was that their claims staff were
particularly efficient. However, the rental company can drag their
feet a bit in compiling a claim.

Your credit card benefits brochure will state clearly whether Loss of
Use is included in the rental car coverage. For Platinum or stronger
V/MC, it's almost a sure thing that it will be covered. For a
basic/Gold card, it often is, but some companies cut corners.
