So I'm thinking I've finally got the stones to try my hand at live poker.
Does anyone have any recommendations for a Vegas poker room well-suited to a
novice player?

I'd like to get into Texas Hold'em in an environment where there's even a
fighting chance I won't be eaten alive.

Luxor has a free class followed by a $1 Limit game 9am and 2pm daily

Gold Coast has a daily $20 tourney at 10am

Oh, and regardless of where you play, you will probably be eaten
alive. It's the price you pay for an edumacation. Budget for a loss.

On a positive note, I play hold'em and Omaha almost daily on-line, and
was hesitant to play in a ring game or tournament at a casino. No
reason to worry: after the first round butterflies, I found that my
on-line 'training' prepared me with good intuition about how to play
"IRL" In Real Life.
I came in 6th place in my first $30 hold'em tourney in the
Peppermill_Reno a few years back. won a prize of $140: about 100
entrants. Only been in a few tourneys since & crapped out early.

I have trouble switching gears from 10 hands per minute VP to one hand
every 5 minutes in live poker. Your Mileage Will Vary.

Before I played VP, I used to play 7 card stud for long hours in
Vegas: Excalibur (10% rake up to $3 per hand) was newbie low-stakes
friendly back then 10 yrs ago. So was Imperial Palace (5% rake at the
time), altho the poker area was quite cramped. I also live poker
played at Caesar's. Sorry I can't speak for present-day Vegas: I'm
exclusively a Reno visitor guy now. Cal-Neva is the low rake place to
play there I think. In Reno: El Dorado, Circus Circus and Grand Sierra
poker rooms are higher rake, but nicer poker rooms.

Getting your feet wet in one of the classes is a good idea. I have not been
playing very long. My first real poker game was after a beginners lesson at
The Excalibur. I had the benefit of playing thousands of hands against
simulated opponents, but wanted to know table rules and customs. The games
after the lessons are very soft and full of newbs just like you.
