XVP - Playing card tax

Excerpt from a CNNMoney article on CNN.com today about strange taxes:

"Playing card tax: If you want a deck of cards in the state of Alabama, be
prepared to shell out an extra dime. The state government has levied a 10-cent
tax on the purchase of a playing deck that contains "no more than 54 cards". If
you object to this, get your playing cards in a different state, or buy a
deck with an extra joker."

I once lived in this state for more years than I like to admit to so this
should not surprise me. At first I thought this was an April Fool's joke, but
that was yesterday. Then I thought it was one of those internet urban legends but
a search of the urban legend websites turned up nothing. Is this real? Is
anyone in Alabama state government playing with a full deck? Jeez.
