IMO, a much "fairer" situation would be a transition to a "consumption tax" as
opposed to an
"income tax". Tax me on what I "spend", not on what I "earn".

But, then, that would put the CPA's, TurboTax, and all those tax
preparation
services out of business. Plus, the Congress now has an almost invisible "cash
cow" with the
income tax, salary withholding and the AMT.

Real tax reform will never happen!

Just to be clear, the material being responded to ("I think the IRS..."), was also what I was responding to, and not what I myself wrote.

It was part of the original post.

It really doesn't matter to me how they take my money; I just wish they would stop. No matter how they choose to do it, they always seem to target my kind of income for taxes, my kind of spending as not eligible to deduct, and I'm sure they'd do the same if the whole system changed.

But I agree that there is not the political will power to make a massive tax reform; the legislators think in terms of "incremental" changes, which means the underlying system is here to stay.
