The Palms gives away a lot of cheapo stuff in its various promotions,
especially the swipe promos. But really, today's Postcard giveaway of "Spa
Products" was a new low in sheer cheesiness! The products were those little soap
bars and shampoo/conditioner/bodywash items you get in your hotel room. No
doubt the same ones in every Palms room. They were perhaps 'bath products' or
'toilitries' -- but not "SPA" products.
Anyway though perhaps more useful and costly than a Pirate Scarf or tiny
flashlight, they just seemed really cheesy.
What's next -- giveaway of a roll of toilet paper or a Palms pen?

Some other PALMS NOTES -- They are still mailing out lots of Free Buffet
coupons. No doubt the reason for the many freebies is that the buffet is just
mediocre to bad. Sometimes the crab legs are good, sometimes not. Sometimes
the "prime rib" is really decent steamship round of beef, sometimes a
not-so-tenderloin, but usually pretty tough and definitely not "prime." The food
seems either bland or overly spiced - but generally not anything one would call
"delicous." We were told the menu will change completely Oct. 1 and be
"heavier" (whatever that means) for the Winter Months. Do you remember when the
place first opened and there was always a line at the buffet, because it was
pretty good? And those wonderful Hawaiian Wed. buffets? No lines anymore.
VP - The FP Deuces Wild progressive is back and nearish to the Buffet
entrance. The big electric sign for the progressive is now back. The $1 10/7
Progressive is opposite the buffet entrance and seems to have a faster moving
progressive than it used to. The bad thing is that there now always seem to be a
lot of people at both of these. I think this must be because so many other
FP VP games have disappeared in Vegas that people are back at these machines.
Unfortunately there is generally no cashback if you play these - only comps
for points.
If anyone from the Palms is reading this, I think your promotions guy is
nuts! Some of the promos are just silly -- last week we had to stand in a long
line to have a guy swipe by hand for us, and then get a scratch card, and
everyone (including us) seemed to get free buffets. You then could take a
chance to "double" it (for 2 free buffets) or not. They really are pushing those
buffets. But since I have Hall of Fame Status, it only costs about $4 in
comp points for a buffet - so "winning" these buffets doesn't do a lot. Since
the Palm system keeps giving you points equal only to comps, what is the big
deal about getting more Free Food in promotions - since you get free food from
comps anyway?
Not to mention, that if I do play $25,000 through on a Reels machine in a
day (as I've been known to do) -- all I get is a mailer that is based on a
"daily average" - so if I have to come back 5-9 times a month to pick up my free
play, my $25,000 big play gets averaged down to say $5000 or even less - so I
get miserably small mailings of $10 or $15 of free play each time. If I do
this play instead on reel machines at almost any strip hotel, I'll get a
free gourmet dinner, and offers for slot tourneys, rooms, etc. and far more
cashback than the piddling little $15s total up to. For example, Venetian is
sending me $200 a WEEK in free play for several months, and tournament offers,
and I haven't played there since end of 2006!! So it just isn't worth it to
play heavily at the Palms on either reels or VP for me.
And those pirate scarfs and so-called "spa products" seem downright
insulting after awhile. If I didn't live only 1 mile from the Palms, I never would
go there. As is, sometimes I just stop in to do the swipe or pick up the
piddling $10 free play on my way to the Wynn or Gold Coast or elsewhere.
At least I can get a laugh every once and a while at the sheer stupidity of
the Palms promotions. However, I somehow doubt this is the effect that the
promotions people intend.
