xvp - Palms Buffet - 2nd visit

By the way, the 10/7 $1 progressive at the Palms is now in front of the
buffet. Last night it was up to $4600, the highest I've seen in a long time.

We checked out the Palms buffet again yesterday night (Fri) with a coupon
for 2 free buffets to see if they did add stuff for the weekend. The good news
was that there were some additions, such as a few Middle Eastern dishes like
hummus, baba gannush (sorry for the bad spelling), hot grape leaves, pita
bread, gyro meat, etc. They also had added prime rib instead of tenderloin
(which I called flank steak), sweet and sour pork, brownies, and cookies. A few
items we'd seen on weeknight were missing like fried mushrooms.

But strangely, crab legs were missing. I asked about them, because I'd been
told they would be there every night, but now the servers indicated they may
or may not be there any night.

So by the time you added and took away, you really barely got more selection
that we'd had on a weekday.

I inspected the salad bar, and it was a very slight improvement over the old
salad bar from before the so-called "multimillion dollar" improvement.
There was tuna salad, cottage cheese, and a couple other new things - at least
the layout made it easier to get to the food.

I again asked for the "English Trifle" which has been advertised in various
flyers, and this time they did have it. It turned out to be pretty much a
strawberry shortcake with the addition of a bit of pudding. I'm not English,
but I don't think that is anything like a real English Trifle (see
_http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trifle_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trifle) )!

The long and short of it is that the buffet at the Gold Coast across the
street still has at least twice the selection of the Palms, for less money. Or
find a $5 discount coupon and head for the Rio Carnival Buffet if you want a
truly excellent buffet.

As for the Palms - it was worth what we paid ($0!), but certainly this is
still one of the poorer buffets in town. And I still have to wonder what they
were thinking when redoing the buffet's decor without rethinking the menu.
