XVP-No more witholding taxes on jackpots for Canadians?

A good friend of mine just returned from LV and told me that he had won a $2000.00 jackpot
at one of the off-strip casinos and was told by the floor person who took his ID that they
were no longer obliged to with-hold on jackpot wins for Canadians as of the beginning of
this year. He got paid the full amount and left a VERY happy fellow. Could anyone please
confirm that this is true as I have looked for info all over the internet and cannot find
confirmation of this.

Thanks,

MO

NC has been installed throughout the casino floor at Tropicana Express (Laughlin). Anyone have a strategy?

It is, sadly, an urban myth. Changes to the U.S. - Canada tax treaty move at a snail's pace. So if they ever propose such an amendment (unlikely) we will all hear about it far in advance.

A few years ago, I was the beneficiary of a casino error (they didn't withhold the mandatory 30%). I thought I was lucky until I received a phone call from the slot supervisor a few hours later demanding that I pony up. At first I tried to refuse, but she insisted - I mean she really insisted - and I ended up with a comped meal to their high end restaurant "for my trouble".

The second best thing that can happen to you in a casino is to have the casino make a mistake that they feel somewhat guilty about ...

Slowpoke

It must depend on the state because I have a CDN friend who hit a taxable on the Gulf Coast and got popped for the entire Federal portion.

I can't confirm or deny, I can report what happened to me.
I hit a taxable at MSS in January and was given a W2G, no withholding.
I am operating under the assumption that they made a mistake.
I have been playing in Vegas for many years and I have found that the smaller casinos frequently screw this up and give us Canadians the wrong form (when I get the wrong form I still file a U.S. tax return, as I believe the IRS would get upset if they had a form without a matching tax return), the big strip casinos always get it right, since they see more of us foreigners .
