The ignorance in this statement is amazing:
If it's a
hundred
and fifty miles away from me and a mile underground, I don't think
it'll affect me much.

Yeah, especially if Osama bin Laden decides to attack it. Nevada went for Bush, right?
I'm glad I live in Pennsylvania.

IMHO 99% of the comments about nuclear energy problems
comes from ignorance about it not knowledge about it!!

A large problem in the USA is the growing innumeracy of the
population, much more so that ignorance or illiteracy. There are a
frightening number of very intelligent people who are innumerate.

BL,
You may very well be correct, since most cannot think
for themselves nor use LOGIC. I am an Electrical
Engineer and was shocked at the thought processes of
many students while getting my MBA. Most reactions
and decisions were almost totally emotion based. I
never really thought about it but innumeracy may be
the basic problem.!

OK, now that I know what innumeracy means, I agree with you.

I'm glad to see that I was not the only one who had to run to the
online dictionary to find out what we were talking about.<g>

Since I'm the one who made this statement, please tell me how I'm
being ignorant. Please tell me how a substance that is essentially
inert, other than being radioactive (not fissionable material or
reactive with its environment, etc.), that is put in airtight
storage containers, and buried deep underground in an area that
receives very little precipitation (thus very little risk of water
table contamination), and furthermore is monitored and guarded 24
hours a day, not to mention stored at least 100 miles from me, is
likely to affect me or my health or well-being.
What IS ignorant, it seems to me, is to get all panicked and trembly
about "nookular" material as a reflex, rather than rationally
evaluating the actual danger. Not wearing the proper SPF sunblock in
Las Vegas is ten thousand times more likely to injure you or give
you cancer than being 100 miles from a nookular waste dump.
