XVP: More Alamo Weirdness In Las Vegas

This is so absurd that I can't stop laughing even though I should be
really P***** off at Alamo. [Full disclosure: Due to lack of
availability of compact cars, I got a free double upgrade; that also
helps to make the abusive business tactic described below more
tolerable.] The real story follows:

I reserved a compact car on Alamo's website and used their "online
prepay" and "online check in" options. My prepaid price to rent a
compact car for 18 days was $351, including all the taxes and fees.
That was for two rental "weeks" plus four additional rental "days."

When making the reservation, I estimated that I would pick up the
car at 9pm on Day 1 and [HERE IS THE KEY FACT] I estimated that I
would return it to Alamo by Noon on Day 18. My flight was scheduled
to leave LV at 10am, but I specified Noon as the return time so I
couldn't possibly incur any overtime charges.

Unlike Johnny Z, I had no problems with the car or road hazards. On
Day 18, I rolled into Alamo at about 8:30am, dropped off the car,
pocketed my receipt (without looking at it), and took Alamo's
shuttle to the airport.

About a month later, I received my credit card statement. In
addition to the prepaid $351, it showed an additional $52 charge
from Alamo.

I thought that they might either (1) have charged me for adding a
second driver to the contract midway through my stay, or (2) charged
me for the "unavailability" upgrade to a larger car. Either would
have been wrong, but both explanations seemed possible.

So, I called Alamo to inquire. Ready for this: They charged me $52
extra because I returned the car three hours BEFORE the return time
that I had estimated in my reservation. That triggered increases in
my "prepaid" rates, both the weekly rate and the additional-day
rate. Those increases totaled about $30 that Alamo actually
pocketed; the other $22 was for taxes and fees on the addional $30
rent.

I asked how much "grace time" I would have had if I'd waited until
after Noon to return the car. The phone representative's initial
response was "29 minutes." Then, after a pause, she said, "No,
wait; because you didn't pick up the car until 9pm [on Day 1], you
actually could have waited until 9:29pm [on Day 18] to return it."
In other words, it cost me $52 extra to return the car three hours
EARLIER than I promised, but it would have cost me nothing to DELAY
returning it until nine hours after my promised return time. Go
figure!

I asked the Alamo person, "As one rational human being to another,
does that make sense to you?" She was not programmed to respond to
that question.

LESSONS LEARNED: If you are arriving LV in the afternoon/evening and
departing in the morning, your reservation should estimate your pick
up time as accurately as possible, but specify a drop off time that
is EARLIER than you actually will return the car. You're already
stuck with paying for the last 24-hour day, and the only ways you'll
incur additional charges is if (like me) you return the car earlier
than promised or (the more familiar fear) you return it after
another 24-hour cycle has started.

Just tell me the rules, and I'll play by them -- if I decide to play
at all.

The GMan

You and I learned differnt lessons from this experience. I learned to
never rent from Alamo.

I used to rent on strip at an independent rental company. It's many
years ago but main details were; It was cheaper to rent car for 7
days at weekly rate rather that 5 days at daily rate. So I rent for a
week. Go to return car early and they wanted to charge for the daily
rate; a higher price. Had a few local friends that worked Frontier.
Didn't check car back in yet. Asked friend if he would take car back
in 2 days. Sure, he'd take it back. Shot back to rental and gave
rental guys a choice, take the car now at the agreed price or you can
pick up car in 2 days in Frontier lot. I'll leave the keys with my
friendly slot attendant. I hope he doesn't joy ride the next two
days..........They took the keys and marked me paid.

Every so often I think about this. How stupid. Another way around
would be to flatten a tire. Toss the keys in car and the jack in a
garbage can. Then, two hours before return time, call for service. No
jack in car. I gotta catch a plane. Now I'm really upset. I have to
take taxi. What kind of rental company are you? When I get home I
gotta call and complain about this one. I should get a rebate for
whole rental. There's no need to think like this if they would only
give you a fair deal.

Cheers.

That's not the way to look at it, it's the converse. It's not that a
weekly rental costs less than 4 days, it's that 4 days costs MORE than
a week.

You have to understand that these policies are not about getting you
the best rates for a week, they are about how these companies get you
these cheap rates by sticking it to the business people who generally
rent for 1-4 days and rarely weekends. This is common and I have yet
to find a major rental company that does NOT have rules like this.

I've had times when a weekly (min 5 days) rental was less than THREE
days regular midweek rental! If they allowed me to take the car for a
week and return it in three days, then everyone would do it that way.

I guess it's the same logic that keeps me from getting 5x points at
Stations or $4000 freeplay at Wynn because I'm not a local.

Not true about everyone taking advantage of special prices. Most folks
just accept what the rental employees say. There are a few who are
tired of being ripped by everyone. How about the big rental car
insurance scam. I'm covered by my credit card and my major insurance
company that insures my car and home. If you have rented for a few
years you will remember being advised by rental employees, you have to
buy the insurance. You didn't, in most cases. Your right about
marketing wanting to stick it to the short term renter. I just differ
with you on "everyone" would rent 5 days and return in 3. I think the
vast majority doesn't have a clue of the options they have.

One more thing. I'm not Vegas local. However, I think the out of
towners get better playing offers than the locals.

GMan and all others! Note!!!! Your rental PICK-UP time can be affected also!

Story: Recently I made a rental reservation via internet from Dollar. I didn't
pay too close attention and put Noon as pick-up time when 2 PM would have been
more accurate. Anyway--flights delayed and when I called the 800 number to tell
them it would be 4-5 pm before I could pick up the rental car -- I was told that they could only extend the rental time by --- I think it was like 4 hours. . . without having to redo the reservation! (at a higher price per day, too!) Luckily, when I got to the actual
Dollar site in Vegas they were very nice and honored my original reservation.

Lesson: Make you pick up time as close as possible to the actual arrival time to give
yourself more "extension" time in case you need it! JH
PS--this must be why I don't like renting cars in Vegas and prefer to use a taxi to and from the airport and then use the free shuttles or the CAT bus system!

I wonder about that blank that asks for the airline traveling on. I
never fill it out. However, I wonder, if ones flight is late, the the
airline space being filled out help in late pick up? I may ask that
question next time I tald to rental outfit.

That's essentially what I was told just last week when I rented a car
from Hertz in Florida. I made the res on the phone, but I didn't have
my flight info in front of me. The agent said I might want to call it
in later so that they would hold the car if the flight was seriously
delayed.
