XVP Laughlin tourism takes a big hit

"...Visitation wasn't as good for Laughlin and Mesquite, which are both monitored by the LVCVA.

Mesquite visitor volume was off 1.9 percent to 91,459 for October, with hotel occupancy down 3.3 percentage points to 85.9 percent. But the average daily room rate was up 2.9 percent to $57.04.

It was worse in Laughlin, where visitation was down 10.1 percent to 177,409, with occupancy down 6 percentage points to 59.3 percent. The average daily room rate was up 4.2 percent to $38.64. Laughlin was hurt by a 27 percent drop in convention attendance to 8,071 people and a 28.2 percent decline in daily auto traffic to 4,353 vehicles on Highway 163..."

Vegas held it's own due to increase in air travel visits.

The thing that gets me, some of the casinos (CB EW) downgrade their VP machines...and that's suppose to make things better and bring the people back?

This is kind of sad, but not unexpected. I too, used to be a regular visitor, but I have not been to Laughlin now in a year. I can find much better vp offering in the Lake Tahoe/Reno area and it is closer to me.

I suppose the casinos are finding their profits down, so they increase their hold on slots and vp, with the short sighted goal of bringing up profits. I believe it is just making it worse.

I guess the question is can all the casinos hold on? Will there be a closure or two? Can Laughlin recover to earlier days as a great gambling destination?

Not sure if they can go back to the old glory days, but they are holding their own along with the rest of Nevada.
a. We are going there for New Years, despite 20 offers from Vegas casino's. Reason- good offer, friendly service, high EV machines.
b. there are a few sold out hotels for New Years - so no sense putting the for sale signs up yet.
c. They have raised the speed limit on the road down there ( hopefully also limit the police ticketing quota that turned me off . )

best...Tom
