XVP - Las Vegas Biggest Ripoff

This message is important to those of you who are new to Vegas and not familiar with many items being discussed in this group. The Biggest Rip Off in Vegas is by the taxi's from the airport illegally taking the airport tunnel when your destination is any where except the very South Strip (Mandalay Bay and South). Use of the airport tunnel increases the fare to the strip by about $10-$15 and if unaware means with tip you pay $12-$18 more that was garnered by simple dishonesty. The taxi's will use every excuse to justify this routing, but per the law they must specifically ask you first, and often they won't ask you or will use trickery to convince you it's the way to go.

First of all, to get to I-15, they can simply take the Swenson exit from the airport, then left on Tropicana, then W to I-15. With the major intersections pedestrian protected, this is just as fast due the shorter distance. To Downtown, they can use Swenson to to Naples to Paradise. To the Strip Swenson to any major arterial to your hotel such as Tropicana, or Flamingo, Sahara, etc. In short do not let them rip you off.

If you see them turning right on exiting the airport to the tunnel, tell them NO WAY!

As soon as I get in a cab at the airport or hotel going to the airport, I
tell the cabbie where I'm going and add "please don't take the tunnel".
Occasionally I get a little grumbling but have never had a problem.

I would add that you should be careful taking a taxi anywhere. I was
in Las Vegas in early April, and my girlfriend and I took a cab from
the Orleans to downtown (the California Hotel specifically). Our
driver took the highway, no surprises, but when he got off the exit
ramp (I didn't note the name of the exit, but it seemed to be some
long windy bypass style offramp), he turned left *away* from downtown.
He clearly was trying to take us for a ride. We protested, "hey,
where are you going?" and he then made some lame excuse about "needing
to let the meter run". But when he got us to the California he
charged for for several dollars less than what the meter said. He
probably still cheated us, but at least we caught him.

The lesson I learned is to rent a car while in Las Vegas. Taxi fares,
even when honest, are quite expensive, and the proportion of crooked
cab drivers seems rather high (admittedly this was a small sample size).
