XVP: IT'S TOO EASY & WHY I POST

IT'S TOO EASY

I started out reading books by Stanford Wong, Lenny Frome, Dan Paymar then
bought a program called VP Tutor.

Casino Player was left in just about every Harrahs hotel room. This led to
Las Vegas Advisor which led to Dean Zamzow's WinPoker and John Kelly's
Lodestone and Skip Hughes Newsgroup which led to TomSki & his wonderful
program. Lately I have been using the work of Jim Wolfe who wrote Frugal
Video Poker and, lest I forget, the creator of this board, Tom Sims.

I have a strong math background but have gotten mentally lazy. My only math
ambition is to be able to add & subtract well enough so I don't get shorted
at the cashier's cage. With the boards & the free advice available, you just
don't need to work anything out anymore when someone else is willing to do it
all for you.

In short, it's gotten easy. You know the old saying, "If it was easy,
everyone would be doing it." Surprise! Everyone is doing it!

It's not uncommon to get advice from your friend/neighbor/relative that you
should buy this program which tells you how to play every hand in video
poker. They can't wait for the program to come out which tells you when to
hit the "Spin Reels" button. (Whoever writes this program remember to leave
the machines in tournament mode.)

WHY I POST

To all those people mentioned above and to the board members who post -- I
owe, I owe, I owe.

So this is my way of paying some of it back -- just a piece (learning from
Dancer's book not to give away the farm). Doesn't matter whether I agree with
you or not, most likely I got something out of it even though I'll never get
to use that info on Foxwoods, Turning Stone et al.

There's a lot of good advice, cautionary tales and strong opinions.

PAUSE. Need to digress for a moment about the strong opinions. People with
strong opinions aren't afraid to say what they think & aren't going to stab
you in the back. They'll just stab you in the front but at least they have
something in common about how they approach life. Tom, maybe we need a rule
about when people express strong opposing views that they need to meet in
person. Most likely they'll become fast friends as long as they're on
opposite sides of the fan.

RESUME. I try to post with discretion. That is don't post promotions which
will be burned out, machines which are too good to be true, runaway
locations, etc. Even when I know I'm never going to be there again, I've
learned that encouraging manic behavior never has an upside to it.

I like to post items that help casino traffic but are also good for the
players. (Some day I'm hoping to get a job as a shill.)

I like to post in response to calls for help if I know anything about it.

I like to post because it boosts my ego & saves me a lot of work. (see honey
how much people value my opinion & my group needs me -- I'll take out the
garbage later)

That's why this group works. It's kinda like the UN
without too much politics. I enjoy reading most posts
as well. Thanks Tom and sometimes Susan for putting
together all these beautiful minds.

Yes, it's gotten easier and you don't have to be a math whiz to learn it, though a good background helps.
   But it still takes quite a bit of work to get good at it, and a lot of people don't want to put that effort in. You still have to study strategy cards and practice on a computer. When I learn a new game, it's usually at least 10 hours on Win Poker before I get decent enough at it to try my luck (skill) in the casino.
   A lot of gamblers still believe it's all luck, or that a little green man is sitting inside each machine deciding how it can tease you into playing another hand. You wouldn't believe some of the stuff I hear in AC. And these are the regular players. Go to the Strip in Vegas, where people come in once every couple of years. I sit at blackjack tables there and cringe at the way some people play, but keep my mouth shut.
   There are more advantage players than a few years ago, but we're still the minority. I see plenty of people playing good machines poorly. They tell me it's a good machine, and I can watch them for about 60 seconds to see if they know what they're doing. Usually they don't.
   Personally, I'll ride the gravy train as long as it lasts. When it ends, I'll cut back on my gambling and only play with money I expect to lose. Then we can all get together and talk about how good a ride we had.
