I highly recommend "Winning Low-Limit Hold'em" by Lee Jones, who is
a good friend of mine. It's the best book I've read for beginning players,
and is available from ConJelco * (the publisher) and most other gambling
stores and catalogs.
Get Gary Carson's book for a good counterpart to Jones'. Conjelco
will no doubt have it as well.
AFAIK, Wilson Software's "Turbo Texas Holdem" is the best available
software. I used it quite a bit when I was learning holdem, but haven't

years, but the signal/noise ratio has declined substantially recently.
http://www.twoplustwo.com isn't bad, if you ignore the sycophantry
and realize that some of their books are pretty mediocre. Much of the
onsite commentary is excellent.

Most brick and mortar casinos have low limit holdem. You could also
consider playing online. The secret to winning in poker is to carefully
choose games habitated by players who are poorer than you.
Or richer; so long as they are dumber.

I recommend learning Omaha 8 high/low first. It's much more cut and
dried than holdem.
O/8 play is sometimes likened to blackjack basic strategy.
