XVP - Has rising prices of airfare changed anyones Vegas plans?

I travel from the east and I have just started checking airfare to
Vegas. It's been two Octobers since I've been out there. Last time
out there my wife spent some time in hospital and has had no desire to
go back; untill now. She suggested maybe we should do Vegas after
summer season at home. In past I would book about 2 months out and if
a deal would come up I would book a couple or even 3 trips; depending
on how good a sale might be. We usually traveled between $160 to
$250. Last time I checked I found $404 per person plus taxes. Sticker
shock for sure, but I expected it. Just like 99 cent gas, I guess $129
round trip is gone.

Has anyone seen any deep discount sales or is it just a question of
high, higher and highest? I have never traveled on a junket, but I've
been thinking that might be an option. I think at one time Harrahs
used to fly some planes but I haven't heard of that lately.

Cheers...Jeep

If you live in or near a Southwest city, you can still get affordable flights to Vegas. You need to watch and be patient though. They have "feature destinations" that change every couple weeks or so. When they get either Vegas or your home airport as a feature destination, you can generally still swing it for pretty cheap (comparatively speaking of course).

From the Washington, DC area, I consider anything to Las Vegas for under $300 to be great and in the $350 range to be good.

Airfares will probably go higher later in the year since US Airways announced that they are discontinuing most of their night time operations at McCarran.

Las Vegas is primarily a tourist destination with few business travelers for airlines and with low fares and high fuel costs even with a full plane, they cannot make any money.

Rising prices and the crisis in the airline industry actually
accelerated our plans. We booked a trip for the first week in August
because we had 75000 Mileage Plus miles sitting around from United.
Not knowing which airlines will merge or go chapter 11 was the
impetus. We will have to change planes in Denver both ways, but can
put up with the inconvenience because the price is right.

Boyd Gaming offers for the summer are on steroids at the moment.
Concert tickets, 2 gift cards, and food credits sealed the deal.

All we'll need to pay for is a rental car (which seems to be pricey
now), gas as we'll probably drive to Laughlin for a day, additional
show tickets for George Carlin? and Louie Anderson?, sunscreen, and
bankroll.

GL to all,

Tom

anyones Vegas plans?

Absolutely! They caused us to cancel our plans for my annual birthday trip to Vegas. This will be the first birthday in several years that I haven't been able to be in Vegas. Boohoo! We usually fly Airtran and have an Airtran Visa "rewards" card. We had plenty of credits for 2 free roundtrips to Vegas; however, when we went to book the trip, they had NO free seats available until the end of September, unless we wanted to spend DOUBLE the points for Biz class! We were so mad! Then we thought of just paying for the seats, but at the time, they were astronomical. It's a real shame, because I had free rooms and lots of other great birthday offers. I can't believe Airtran in being so stingy with their free seats! Since we canned the trip, they have instigated a sale, so maybe you'll be lucky enough to get in on that.

Yes! I've decided park my big SUV here in Michigan and walk to Vegas
this year to save money. I'm leaving now, so look for me around
December.

Let's not assign all the blame to rising prices. We previously flew to LV
six times a year, when the casinos cut back pay schedules, rising prices for
airfare, AND THE TSA made us decide it was there are substitutionery
vacations that offer just as much satisfaction.

Our decision was based more on pay tables and TSA. I'll be happy when TSA
employees go back to their WalMart jobs. We just don't care to be treated
like a criminal by some jerk with short man syndrome.

We're still spending the same amount of time in Las Vegas, but instead of going four times a
year for a week each time, we're going twice a year and staying for two weeks each time.
We're ending up paying for some of our lodging since the longest comp we get is at Sam's
Town for four days.

I think at one time Harrahs

used to fly some planes but I haven't heard of that lately.

Cheers...Jeep

Harrah's used to fly from Tulsa to Laughlin quarterly, not any more. We'd go when ever we
could. Drive to OKC, park the car, and drive back after 4 days of fun? Nah!

We'd go to Vegas about 6 times a year on Southwest for $425 roundtrip for both of us. Now
it's $950+ for a round trip. I've tried DING in Tulsa but the market is too good for them to
discount flights I guess.

Vegas paytables? 7/5 JOB? 9/5 DDB? I'll go to New Orleans, Shreveport, or Tunica, Great
paytables, free rooms and more to do than hang out in the casino if things go bad.

Live it up Gary, it can't last too long. Build more clubs so more folks can stand in line to see ?
?? "The back of the person in front of you in line." Cool!! Not what we went to Vegas for.

Off to Vegas and my free massage in two days!

If you're not in a city directly served by a discounter
that regularly flys to LV, the best advice is to book
now. Decreasing capacity means prices are going North.

Higher airfare actually moved me from a discounter
to a larger carrier with direct service. When the cost
difference is small, there's no reason to take discount
flights with a stop.

Last time wife & I were in Vegas we used miles to pay for trip. As I
mentioned, she wound up in hospital. As a result, we had to extend
departure for 3 weeks. However, US Airways couldn't book return for 3
months out, using my miles trip. As a result, they zinged us good for
return. Of course there is nothing one can do about rare cases of bad
luck. If you can cash the miles, I think use them as fast as you can.
As you mention cashing miles or rewards sometime can be hard to do for
Vegas travel. I wonder about Reno? Just thought of that as I write.
It's been yrs since I've been there. I think It's a fun town too and
Tahoe is not far away.

Good point about pay scheduls. Actually, we have been spending good
bit of time in AC; 3 nite long weekends. Have the beach in summer,
some 9/6 JOB, some CB and coupons at my home base, entertainment and
good food. Driving allows us to decide today and book rooms for
tomorrow; not much advance planning required. If it wasn't for at
least a few 99.5% games in AC, Vegas would be more attractive
again. I could hunt down those few 10/7 DB, FPDW and NSUDs. Fill in
with some decent progs and I'd have a fair plan.

The wife and I normally go 2x a year but are limiting it to one full week this time. As for Rental cars, check out Thrifty. We got a compact for a week at $160, including tax and fees (gas extra).

We reserved a bus trip to Laughlin for one day. $5/per person including a buffet. They didn't specify where the buffet was but they are allowing 6 hours in Laughlin. Check it out at:

http://www.lasvegasgrandcanyontour.com/

Click on the bus tours on the right side for Laughlin. I figure at today's gas prices, $10 is a bargain.

Flying out of DFW, we're stuck with AA, USAir or Southwest. Southwest because of the Wright Amendment still doesn't offer anything decent to LV from here. AA and USAir pretty much match fares. I prefer AA.

I checked US Airways a couple weeks ago and clicked on rental car
included with air fare. I looked at the price for two and it seemed
the price was cheaper flying exact same route and the car was
included. I looked real close and didn't see any tricks. However, I
just glanced at rate fast and I'm not 100% sure that car was
included with price. I was pricing 6 nites over and they included
car for 7 days as thats what was needed to be able to return car to
airport with departure time. With a car they quoted $396 round for 2
and without car it was $404. They quoted with full size car.

Buy the way, my first choice was Dollar in the past.
