XVP Hand pay spinoff, why ?

Why do many casinos ask you to spin off a hand pay screen, such as
when you hit four deuces. I have heard it is so that someone else
will not try to claim the hand. In fact I had an attendant tell me
this, when I asked why. I then asked about the fact that many
machines, especially the TITO ones just rack up the credits, so if
one were to immediately cash out the large paying hand would still
be on the screen. I just got a stare for an answer.

I have also read on line that it was an old procedure established to
clear a machine because people tend to think that if a machine has
just hit, it is not going to hit again soon (we all on this board
know that is not true, but supposedly the general public does
not.)

In other words it does not make any sense to me, but I am sure
somebody has an answer.

Last night I hit four deuces on my last five credits. The slot
person hand paid me and asked me to spin it off. I said there were
no credits left and that I was leaving. She said OK, opened up the
machine and spun off the hand.

This is purely conjecture but one reason could be to ensure that the floor
people key the machine. If management did not require them to watch the
customer play off the hand, then they could forget to key the machine after
paying you. Theoretically then after they walk away, either you or someone
else could then claim they just hit that hand again.

The big reason they ask you to play it off is the old tradition that
machines left with a "smile" will be
avoided by most players- thus wasting valuable casino real-estate. Many
times after the big hand pay , I feel like quitting so I'll cash out -
problem is ( for them) there's still a winning hand up on the screen. The
very best places ( like Sams town, John asuaga's nugget, golden nugget,
etc ) will very graciously open the machine up , and load it up with 5 coins
and say to you "please pay if off sir". The grind joints will ask you to
reach into your own pocket and do it ( but your NOT obligated , regardless
of the high pressure request). I usually say in that case -" No Problem -
Please load it up for me with 5 coins and I'd be glad to play it off for
you". Don't have them play the hand off, cause if they hit something they
usually will keep the money, but if your hand touches the button , its YOUR
money.

regards...Tom

That is the reason I've always been told (i.e. to prevent someone
from trying to claim the hand or to prevent the original player from
waiting a few minutes and then trying to "double claim" the hand.)

The stupidest thing along these lines that I've ever run across
happened a couple of years ago on a 50 play nickle machine. I cashed
out for some amount over $100 which generates a hand pay on these
machines. After they paid off the credits, they gave me a nickle and
told me to play one more spin!!!! Just for cashing out credits. I
got a good laugh out of this brilliant casino move.

Casinos as players to "spin off" hands for two main reasons:
1. To ensure that there is no malfunction with the machine. If you
just hit a jackpot and then spin off and hit another jackpot, the
will rule that a malfunction occured and your win will be void.
2. To ensure that less knowledgeable players will play on the machine.
If players see that a machine has a jackpot showing, they will assume
that the machine is "cold" and will not play on it anymore. If a
losing result is displayed, players will assume that the machine
is "due" for a jackpot.

What? Why would two identical hands in a row qualify as a malfunction?

My wife hit BACK to BACK Royals at RIO last year on the Progressive DDB
$0.25 bank on the same machine. As she hit the button to play off hte first
one (they were watching but did not even say to play it off) up popped the
Three to the Royal which she then drew the other two cards to complete it.
It was in a different Suit though. There was NO question about validity of
the payout or machine and they went and got the other money. Tom

You mean they would take your hand pay back/

Doubtful.

Doubtful.

Several years ago, at Circus Circus Reno, I saw a woman who had hit a
heart royal on .25 FPDW; she was asked to play it off, and the SAME
royal came back in the SAME ORDER. This might have suggested a
malfunction, but as the floorman told me, "We don't know that it WAS a
malfunction until we examine the machine; after all, it could have
been simply a piece of extremely good luck. We can't keep the customer
standing around for two hours waiting for her second $1000." They paid
her (again), then shut the machine down.

Not that this one incident is at all indicative, but I would say if
they request you to play another hand with your money, they are
obligated to live with the result.

Several casinos, such as the El Cortez, used to cope with this problem
by having the floorman grab a few coins out of the hopper to play the
"play-off" hand. They would usually let you keep the results of the
hand....also, if you had a coin jam or an unregistered coin, and they
had to open the machine, they would grab enough coins to give you a
"free" hand for your trouble.

Ah, the good old days, before all the casinos hated our guts!

Casinos are generally very paranoid. While 2 royals in a row is
possible, it is highly unlikely. The casino will usually assume that
if a royal flush occurs immediatly after a royal that something is
afoot. Yes, it may be kind of stupid, but this is the way that
casinos think.
Casinos like to say that "card counters threaten our bankroll!",
however casinos will probably make more money from BAD card counters!
In fact, it was early card-counting books like "Beat the Dealer" that
lead to an explosion of popularity in Blackjack over other table
games. Casino profits from Blackjack actually INCREASED because of
basic strategy and card counting! However, nowadays casinos
are "cracking down" on basic strategy players by using 6:5BJ, H17,
CSMs and other "countermeasures" against people that they are making
(not enough) money off of.
