Possible routes after getting to Stockton are:
1. Continue on 5 to Sacramento, then E on 80 to Reno. A side trip with lots
of possibilities is to take 267 to N Lake Tahoe & then 431 (Mt Rose Hwy) back
to Reno. This takes you through Truckee, Kings Beach, Incline Village &
another part of Reno that most haven't seen before. If you stop to smell the
roses, you'll find a variety to pique your interests.
2. Continue on 5 to Sacramento, then E on 50 to Lake Tahoe. After stopping
there, continue on 50 to 395 where you head N to Reno. Before getting to Lake
Tahoe, you'll go through Placerville which has a historic downtown district &
a Mel's Drive-In for baby boomers like me. A few miles E of Placerville is
Camino & Apple Hill which is worth a stop if you like all things apple (the
edible kind). Personally I like Gizdich Ranch which is much closer to you
(Watsonville) has better apples but this has more variety.
"The Apple Hill® Growers Association, located in Camino, CA, was once a
fledgling association comprised of 16 original ranches. Today it boasts more
than 50 ranches including Christmas tree growers, wineries, a micro brewery,
Spa and vineyards. (Apple Hill Growers Office: 530-644-7692). "

3. My favorite route for going to Reno is to take 4 E to 99 N to 88 exit.
Stay on 88 all the way to Minden where you connect with 395 N to Reno. On 88,
you will have little to no traffic & breathtaking scenery all to yourself. A
couple of detours to consider along 88:
a. 49 N to Placerville. It goes through Sutter Creek which has wineries &
good restaurants.
b. 89 NW to Lake Tahoe. I consider this way to Lake Tahoe less dangerous
than the mountain-hugging finale on 50. If you continue on 88, just shortly
after 89 is Sorenson's Resort. Stop in for its beef stew:

Another detour to consider AFTER reaching Minden is to go to Genoa W of 395
& between Minden & Carson City. It's a historic SMALL town that's gone
upscale but has a lot of events during summer. If you can make it, visit the Candy
Dance at the end of September. Here's their calendar of events:

1a. XVP: Good side trips enroute to Reno?
Posted by: "Joe Schober" afljoeys@aol.com afljoeys
Hi,
Next week on Monday morning we'll be driving from San Jose, CA to
Reno, and then reversing the drive on Friday. We're looking for fun,
interesting side trips along the way in both directions -- both things
of scenic or tourist value, as well as places to stop for a good
meal. Any suggestions?
A couple of things we're considering so far are Chez Panisse
(Berkeley, CA) for lunch, and the Jelly Belly factory (Fairfield, CA).
(For reference, some of the things we've done in the past include the
Lake Tahoe area, scenic mountain drives, and Sonoma Valley wineries...)
