Amtrak has several train bus combinations with their San Joaquin Valley Service (Bus San Jose-Stockton, Train Stockton-Bakersfield, Bus Bakersfield-Las Vegas) with huge discounts with only 3 days advance of 30% if paid by Mastercard at the station or your travel agent or 35% if booked on www.amtrak.com or 30% to 35% with the same discounts as above on their west coast promotion. One of the buses from Bakersfield to Las Vegas isn't allowed in the discounts, the others are.
This way your fare is well under the $400 round trip that you don't want to play and their guest rewards program doesn't use capacity controls like the airlines (except Southwest) do. The time on the train and bus can be used to read up on your video poker skills instead of watching the bumper of the car in front of you!

The wife and I want to get to our favorite city and are thinking of driving.
Problem is, we live in San Jose, CA area and have never done it.
I hear it takes like 9 or 10 UNGODLY hours.

over half way between to get some sleep on the way to and from vegas.
We've gotten SO SO SO many free rooms that we're dying to use but don't want
