XVP: Getting to vegas by car

The wife and I want to get to our favorite city and are thinking of driving.
Problem is, we live in San Jose, CA area and have never done it.
I hear it takes like 9 or 10 UNGODLY hours.

Does anyone have some info about this drive??? Or maybe of a hotel or two
we could stay
over half way between to get some sleep on the way to and from vegas.

We've gotten SO SO SO many free rooms that we're dying to use but don't want
to waste $400 on tickets when we could put that through the VP MACHINES !!!
AND HIT ROYALS FOR XMAS...

If you go by way of Reno (not sure if that's a good idea or
not--Donner Pass), there are hotels (with casinos of course) in Reno
and Fallon NV. I've travelled from Sacramento to Las Vegas that way in
the past.

Not sure about the southern route, as I haven't been that way. There
are casinos in Laughlin NV though.

There's no way to avoid the 9 or 10 ungodly hours. Best to cut east to I-5 south, cut accross to the 99 south, catch the 58 east in Bakersfield to Barstow and then I-15 north into Vegas. I once made that trip from Vegas to Salinas. I then understood why people go to Reno.

When I lived in Walnut Creek it took less than 7 hours. (About 6 hrs. 15 mins from the I-680 / I-580 interchange).This was travelling at no more than 7 miles above the speed limit. Even from most parts of SJ it might save time to take 680 to 580 E. This will put you on I-5 S. After a boring couple of hundred miles take Route 47 (Wasco) across to SR 99 S. It is only about 15-20 miles to Bakersfield. If you really need to break up the trip you can get a decent, inexpensive motel here. Take US 58 from Bakersfield across the desert to I-15. Then it's a straight shot dodging insane LA / LV traffic.

SR 47 is 2 lanes but I rarely got stuck behind a slow truck (and if I did passing is easy since the road is very straight, this is the Central Valley). There are a couple of really short stretches of US 58 that are 2 lane. There is way too much traffic to be able to pass a slow truck but you won't have to go more than a few miles before getting 4 lanes again.

I always found it more convenient than flying since it was a fairly short trip (if I left at 6 AM I'd be in LV well before 1:00). I often went for long weekends, leaving early on Friday and coming home Monday afternoon.
