XVP: Football contest info

For those who care:
Palms: $25 entry fee, single-property contest. Their shtick is that
you are competing against a smaller player pool than Stations or
Coast. This is true, but given that you only get the one entry, you
NEED the extra equity to make the contest worthwhile.

Fiesta: First entry FREE. Can't argue with that.

Coast: $25 entry, four entries gets a fifth free. The $25 level
mailers each included a free football contest entry.

Stations: The best contest to enter for several reasons:
1. One entry is $25, but carries a $10 free slot play bonus.
2. The second entry is $25 more, but the slot play bonus is bumped
up to $25, AND you get a third entry free.
3. Stations features the "fiddle in the middle" which usually pays
about $250 for finishing at exactly .500. This keeps the interest
alive in an entry that is out of contention for the big bucks.
4. There is the "most losers" in addition to the "most winners"
pool. Prizes for the losers are almost as good as the winners prizes.
5. BIG significance (and I didn't realize this, or take advantage of
it, last year): you can input your picks at least one week ahead;
maybe the entire season can be input at once for all I know. You can
always change your picks up til game time. This would be good if you
knew you were going to be out of town for a week or more. I'll check
and see how this works.

I got several free entries for the Stations contest last year but
nothing this year. Both years I've been at the Platinum level. Did any
one receive free entries?

I'd like to know if there are any that you can enter and not reduce your value if you can't play every week. We might be out of town for a week or two during the season. Any that someone else could put in your pick if you were gone?

Same here, Scot. Marie and I both got 3 free entries last year, but
not this year. I guess they are tightening up on that benefit. I
assume you can still pay for the entries with points.

Stardust (Boyd's) is a weekly contest. Enter any or every week. Same for
Poker Palace, Opera House and a few others. All are free to enter but no
one else can do your picks.

I recieved three free entries at GVR. My play is way down this year
due to 1/2 points and bad luck but I'm President and at 120k in the
past 90 days or so.

Well, if you miss a week, you're still able to play for the weekly
prizes. This is true of all of them, that you have to play every
week to qualify for the overalls.
It is possible to have someone put in your entries for you:
At Stations, you need to go to the entry kiosks (there's always a
couple near the sports book) and swipe your club card (I forget
whether you also need to enter your PIN). Obviously, someone can do
this for you. I also think you can do the entries one or more weeks
ahead, obviating the problem.
Coast uses cards that you fill in with #2 pencil, showing your picks
and your contest entry number. You have to then physically give the
ticket to the writer, who then gives you a receipt showing your
picks. The writer doesn't, however, ask for ID (and doesn't need to,
apparently). The cards for the next week as well as the current week
are usually available, so your faithful assistant could either turn
in the card that you had previously filled out, or fill it out at
the time, as long as he knew your contest number.
Fiesta had used the paper entry system, but may switch over to the
Stations-style kiosk entries.
Palms uses paper tickets which must be handed to the writer.

In any case, it's always good strategy to get SOME entry in for each
week, even if your assistant mskes his or her picks at random,
because you want to stay in contention for the overalls, given that
a substantial overlay exists due to the fact that only about half of
the entrants put their picks in EVERY week (a lot gets lost over the
holidays).

Harrah's KC has announced they will again run their $1 Million Football
Madness contest during the NFL season. The idea is to pick winners (no line
b.s. to worry about). The top 26 spots get a prize from $100 to $50,000.
There are also weekly winners with a $5000 top prize. If some guru picks
220 games correctly, Harrah's writes them a check for $1,000,000. 220 games
is a little under 13 correct picks a week (yikes!)

Believe it or not, I actually don't suck in these contests. In 2003, I
averaged a little over 9 correct picks a week, three times hitting 12 or
more. In Week 3 I would have won at least a share of the $5000 weekly prize
if Rams head coach Mike Martz hadn't SHOVED HIS OWN HEAD COMPLETELY UP HIS
ASS during the final minute of the Seahawks game**. Not that I'm bitter.

ANYWAY, I'm thinking football handicapping software on the old home computer
might boost my pre-cognitive skills just a smidgen. Might be all I need to
get one week's top prize.

Any recommendations?

have TWO friggin time outs left. Martz calls three "home run" passes down
the middle of the field where six Seahag defensive backs are waiting to bat
them down, and then laugh. No slant patterns in the Rams playbook? Ever
hear of a square out, then stop the clock?? Forget what a field goal is,
MARTZ??? Aaarrrgghhh. Not that I'm bitter.
