XVP: Flying tips

From AAA VIA magazine Jan - Feb 2006 issue:

--Changing an airline reservation
"Charges for switching flights vary widely, from nothing to $200. ...

To protect yourself, fly Southwest, which doesn't tack on a fee, or JetBlue,
which charges just $20 if you make changes online."

--Flying with heavy luggage
"You pay $99 for a cheap fare to Las Vegas, but your excess-baggage fee can
cost just as much. ... For a round-trip flight, you pay both coming and going.
...It's often cheaper to ship by parcel post or UPS, timed to coincide with
your arrival."

I'll add another tip, if you have heavy/oversized items to bring home, say
from a tournament, ship it home. To save, choose the cheapest mode as you
probably don't care about when it gets there. There's a UPS store at the strip
mall at the NE corner of Maryland and Flamingo.

--Checking bags at the curb
"Airlines such as United, American and Alaska are rolling out $2 per bag
curbside check-in fees .... Southwest, JetBlue, Delta, Hawaiian, and Continental
do not currently charge for curbside assistance..."

--Email yourself
"... you can also use email to write notes to yourself about your journey.
When you get home, print the letters and staple them together to make a travel
journal...."
