We were blithely inside Fiesta Rancho playing in a Video Poker tourney when
all this came down, the floods etc. Rancho and Lake Mead have Texas Station
and Fiesta Rancho right across the street from each other. Unbeknownst to us,
the worst kind of rain and flooding was occuring at our doorsteop inside
Fiesta. We continued to play, eat supper, and leave a little after 7 pm. Our
progress west on Lake Mead to Summerlin was slow, especially around Rainbow, but
not too ugly. It got worse the more west we headed. We started to notice a lot
of mud, gravel and downed branches on Lake Mead near Rampart. Pretty soon,
trees and assorted other debris showed up. Nothing stopped us for long and we
finally turned in to our Summerlin driveway, only to see our neighbor to the
west's yard with three large downed trees, mud and much gravel in the street.
This turned in to an opportunity to meet a number of our neighbors, a good
thing. Our neighbor directly to the north lost her retaining wall and most of it
had slid into the lower neighbor's yard as did another neighbor's wall two
doors south. Fortunately our only damage was our gas grill took a dive into a
glass patio table, not breaking it. Our hose reel storage had moved some four
feet south of where it normally lives. All in all, our area sustained some
65 mile per hours winds and approximately 2.76 " of rain, we have already had
over 3" for the year before this, and normal here is 4" per year or so.
The best thing about this storm, no lives were lost. There is a lot of
property damage and cleanups to do, but the casinos play on and you can be sure we
will be at one tomorrow. They will make sure the roads are clear. Shirl in
damp Las Vegas who doesn't mind the humidity yet as she is still used to Ohio
humidty. It actually felt pretty good today.....quit throwing mud clods at me
long time locals!!!
