XVP - fans

I'm a smoker and my wife is not, as well as really being bothered by smoke. Hence, I don't smoke in our home.

But, the best way [I've learned all the tricks] is if you are on a slant top, put the fan between you and the smoker and aim it out towards the aisle. It keeps smoke from drifting into your face, blows it away from everyone, but will give the message to a rude smoker without actually blowing it back into their face causing a confrontation.

Yes, I've been in some nasty confrontations too.
   Before I sit down at a machine, I look at the people on both sides of it for cigarettes, filled ashtrays (Though many AC smokers don't bother with that amenity. They prefer to use the floor or the coin tray.), cancer sticks or other smoking paraphernalia. If there's a smoker, I move on.
   But many times someone sits down next to me and just lights up. Then I take out the (low powered) fan. Sometimes they get pissed and say "I don't see a 'no smoking' sign." To which I respond: "I don't see a 'no fans' sign." If they get too huffy, I remind them that they use a substance that is toxic not only to themselves, but to those around them. If they want to poison their own bodies that's their choice, but they don't have the right to poison mine. If they insist on trying to do so, I have the right to defend myself.
   I have had smokers get huffy when I merely ask them to hold the cigarette on the other side (when I was sitting there first). One "gentleman" in the Claridge walked by me and blew smoke in my face to make his point.
   I can't wait til they ban the crap entirely in casinos.

I agree with all of this except one part. I see no reason why it should
matter who got there
first. Being there first entitles you to the machine you are playing, not
to poison the air
around you.

My most common "aim" scenario is this... Let's assume the smoker is to
my right, and I'm on a slanttop or bartop. I place the fan on my
left, aimed directly toward the smoker but about a foot or two above
their head. That way it's doesn't blow directly in their face, and it
actually blows fresh(er) air into/through my breathing area while
pushing the smoke away at the same time. I find the fan works better
from a slight distance like that as the air fans out to cover a larger
area (but this only works with fairly powerful fans).

When it gets really bad (2-3 smokers directly nearby), I sometimes
just place the fan at some distance (even on the floor if possible)
and point it toward me, in order to blow breathable air into my area,
rather than fighting a losing battle to blow the smoke out of my area.
