Ric-
I think Shirl from Ohio is the expert.
I bought mine for $1 at WalMart. It's a little hand-held thing. I direct it wherever I think it will do the most good, usually the direction the smoke is coming from. Sometimes I hold it near my nose pointing away from it so it will get whatever's coming at me.
Shirl has a bigger one with more power, and I want one of those.
A fan is only good for smokers sitting within a few feet of you. If the place is real smoky, you'll get lots of second-hand cancer unless you wear a gas mask.
Best of luck.

I was wondering how the people who own them direct the air flow; down, up,
back at the source of the odor, etc.
I will be in KC next weekend and seem to remember the casinos there being
very smoky.
