referring, of course, to a little Wedgwood cachepot, they had picked
up in an antique store. By the time my son got finished
explaining "what she meant", the Agent had looked through their
entire car. Then with a look of pity to my son, waved them through.
My mother came up to visit me when I lived in Toronto. Customs asked if she
had brought any gifts with her and she said, "No, just a little pot for my
daughter." They did a double take and she showed them a pressure cooker.
However, a Canadian friend on the way to the States was stopped and asked to
show his briefcase. He opened it and they asked about a baggie in it and he
(early in the morning, before he was really thinking) replied, "Oh, that's
my grass." He never since has been able to cross the border either way
without a major examination of his bags.
