XVP - Derby Aftermath

Hi Gang:
Isn't the Derby an unbelievable event every year! You just never know. And
the human interest stories surrounding the race most of the time boggle
the mind.
Mine That Bird, purchased for $9,500, trained by a Derby rookie, whose
stable had the grand total of one win this year, vanned over 2,000 miles from
New Mexico to make the race, who couldn't even win a race at Sunland Park
prior to the Derby shocks the bluebloods of Kentucky and the racing world
with a 50-1 stunner in the Run for the Roses.
Ya gotta love it!
Does anyone know of anybody who picked this horse to win?
Curiously, the morning of the race I received an email from a friend who
mentioned Mine That Bird as a horse with a big Tomlinson figure (which
measures a horse's ability to run on an off track). I don't know if he bet him,
but that was the ONLY horse he mentioned in the email.
On to the Preakness!

CoachVee

I was at a race track in Minnesota. No racing yet, but they had off track betting. The place was full, everyone having a great time, but I did not run into 1 person who cashed a winner. Lots of place and show bets, but nothing big.

I guess Mine That Bird, didn't read the papers and was just loving to race.

So what does that do for the odds on the Triple Crown?

Thanks again for the insights.

Another curiosity was the Dosage Profile of Mine that Bird (5.40), much higher than any of the other 19 horses in the race (the only one above 4.00). A profile above 4.00 supposedly reflects a sire bloodline with less stamina, a negative over 1.25 miles. In addition, the Dosage Profiles of the two runnerups were also higher than any of the other horses. The combination of the Tomlinson figure, gate position, and number of prior wins were clues that suggest betting Mine That Bird. It was the low speed figures (81 career best)that tripped me up.

Your friend was mistaken. Of the twenty horses in the race, Mine That Bird had the fourth lowest wet track Tomlinson rating. Just like everything else in Mine That Bird's past performances, that Tomlinson rating turned out to be misleading.
