XVP, crossing the border

Labor Day weekend 2001, when we tried to return to the US from Vancouver to
Seattle after a weekend in Vancouver, the border agent made a big deal about
not believing my wife and I might have gone to Canada for a weekend getaway "all
the way from Las Vegas" - geez. The fact that we had valid passports was of
no interest to him. A week later, something like two dozen foreigners in
groups of six or so had no trouble clearing airport security with sharp objects
(easily seen by metal detectors) and boarding their flights.

If my point is not obvious, I'll spell it out - your experience had NOTHING
to do with post 9/11 security issues.

Coming back into the US, the US Border guard said "Why should I let you back
into the US?". He also said if the security level were one notch higher, he
wouldn't let me back in.
