XVP, crossing the border

Jean,

Entering Canada isn't tough. Getting back to the US is tough. I went over to Canada last month with only a driver's license. Getting over, the Canadian Border guard just said to bring a voter's registration card next time. Coming back into the US, the US Border guard said "Why should I let you back into the US?". He also said if the security level were one notch higher, he wouldn't let me back in. After 5 minutes of lecture and 5 minutes of 'I'm going to make you wait', he let me go. I imagine after the inaugeration and Iraqi elections, the security level will be pretty high for a while. Be ready to open your car trunk and don't bring any beef back into the US. I had a doggie bag from the restaurant where I had lunch and the border guard asked if there were any beef in it. Driver's license plus a birth certificate or voter's registration card should work.

Custom agents, IRS agents and airport security people
are if anything else INCONSISTENT. I live in Dallas
and flew to Houston on a one day business trip after
9/11 before they hired the federal security folks that
do a much better job that the contract types. Put my
briefcase through the X-Ray machine and they found a
steak knife I forgot I had in there which I used to
peel apples on my lunch hour. They gave me the third
degree but let me keep it!! That afternoon, coming
back I held it in my hand as I approached security at
the Houston airport and they took it away from me. I
was REALLY PISSED!!
